Today is Elite Physical Therapy’s 19th anniversary, and my overwhelming emotion is gratitude. Thank you to each patient who has trusted us with their care, to each referral source who has had confidence in us, and to each member of the Elite family present and past who has given time and talent to make Elite such a special place. Happy Friday! It may be winter time and extra cold outside, but spring is right around the corner which means ideal running conditions!
But, before you lace up those shoes make sure you are getting an ample warm up in.
Something as simple as doing a couple minutes of leg swings, squats, high knees and butt kicks can get the body ready for whatever length of run you are going to conquer.
Also, having a good warm up can help decrease a risk of injury, improve blood flow to muscles, enhance joint mobility and better performance.

Improper shoe wear can also affect your gait pattern or how you walk which can lead to other issues. Regularly worn shoes should fit well (not too loose or tight) and replaced at least once a year. Happy Wednesday! Typically, we spend a lot of time sitting, whether it is for work or watching TV or a movie. It is important to think about the way your back and hips are aligned when sitting. A common mistake that is made regularly when sitting is having a thick wallet in your back pocket. The picture below shows what your back and hips look like in the previously mentioned scenario. The best thing to do is to not have your wallet in your back pocket. Happy Friday! After a knee replacement, proper pillow placement when lying down or elevating your leg to ice is key. When putting the pillow under your leg, it should never be placed directly under the knee. The pillow can be placed under the lower leg/calf, either vertical or horizontal. This is important due to not allowing the knee to stay in a bent position for a long period of time. Increasing the knee bend will come with time, but the first task to achieve after a knee replacement is getting your leg fully straight. Placing the pillow under your lower leg/calf will help. Happy Tuesday! Squatting is a functional activity that everyone does many times in a day. It is why, us as physical therapists, add it to nearly all exercise programs.
It is a great task to gain strength into the legs but also becomes a great starting point for being able to perform other functional activities (like lifting).
With the right dosage, intensity and load - it can help get you back to doing even the basic tasks (and hopefully more!).

Happy Wednesday! The Trap. The Upper Trap. The Trapezius. Whatever you want to call it - it plays a vital role in active movement of both the neck and shoulder. It is quite common to have restrictions with turning your head if that muscle is tight (which can lead to that lingering neck pain you are having).

Happy Friday! With school starting back up, you need to make sure you’re not setting yourself up for failure with your sitting posture at your desk or in class.
Did you know poor sitting posture can impact your health?  
1.  Less oxygen to your brain: slouching restricts breathing, reducing oxygen flow.
2. Compressed lungs and heart: slouched position limits lung capacity, affecting your heart.
3. Strained neck & kyphosis: poor posture strains the neck and contributes to a rounded upper back.
4. Bad back and inflexible spine: slumping leads to back pain and reduced spinal flexibility.
5. Tight hip flexors and weak abs: sitting tightens hip flexors and weakens abs, causing postural impairments.
6. Weak gluts: sitting weakens gluteal muscles, affecting stability and lower back support.
7. Poor circulation and muscle degeneration: prolonged sitting impedes blood circulation leading to possible muscle degeneration.
