You don’t have to choose between your faith and your identity.
For many LGBTQIA+ people raised in high-control religion,
those parts of life were framed as opposites.
They don’t have to be.
At Divergent Path Wellness, we offer secular, evidence-based therapy
for people of every background and intention —
including those for whom faith is deeply important.
Our religious-trauma-informed therapists
work with clients across Virginia
to explore faith, identity, and authenticity — without agenda.
✨ Want support as you navigate these questions?

Sometimes love looks like… dimming the lights and keeping the blanket pile.

For many neuroqueer couples, connection starts with comfort.
If the space is overwhelming — too bright, too loud, too scratchy — your nervous systems can’t relax into intimacy.

Sensory check-ins aren’t about being high-maintenance.
They’re about making the relationship a space where both partners can breathe.

💬 Try asking: “What would make this space feel good for you right now?”
It’s a small question with a big impact.

When have you felt most free?
Freedom isn’t just a concept — it’s something we live, feel, and co-create.
Reflecting on the moments you’ve felt most free can help you find or build more of them — for yourself and for your community.

Community care is self-care, and self-care is community care.

🖋 Journal Prompt: When have I felt most free — and what made that possible?

💛 Come see us at Charlottesville Pride on September 6!
We’ll be raffling a sensory-friendly self-care kit (including a weighted plush possum, Loop earplugs, and Spek fidgets).

Volunteering seemed like a great idea before you ghosted?
You’re not alone. Overcommitment is common for people with executive function challenges.

Saying yes is easy — following through is where our brain’s management system can get snagged. Even when the cause matters to us, the overwhelm can be real.

🦴 Possum’s challenge this week: signing up for three Pride events… and not answering a single organizer email. The guilt hits hard.

💡 Thomas’s tip – Use an “energy budget” before committing. Ask: Do I have space for this task AND the recovery after? This makes your yes more sustainable and your follow-through more likely.

What often happens when people come out?

It’s normal for it to bring up a lot of self-doubt — especially if you got the message that being yourself wasn’t what was expected.
In affirming therapy, a therapist can help you:
• Take small steps to build confidence in self-expression & self-advocacy
• Practice self-compassion & ease the pressure to be “certain”
• Connect with people who support, appreciate & relate to you

Emotional connection isn’t always easy—but dismissing emotions often comes with a cost.
Sometimes, other people’s feelings can feel like too much.
It’s human to want to shut down, change the subject, or “make it better.”
But when we dismiss someone’s emotions—by minimizing, correcting, or ignoring—we send the message:
“Your feelings don’t belong here.”
Over time, this erodes trust, safety, and connection.
Instead of reacting, try pausing.
You don’t need the perfect words—but the relationship needs you to mutually find a way to stay present to your partners’ experience.

You’ve left the church, but the fear of hell still creeps in? You’re not alone — religious residue is a known phenomenon where the messages of high-control religion linger implicitly, even when you know they’re harmful to you.

Matthew is an LGBTQ+ affirming, secular religious trauma therapist serving clients in our Charlottesville office and online across Virginia. His work meets you where you are — without judgment, without pressure — and helps untangle the old narratives so you can build a life grounded in your values.

Do you freeze in the face of conflict?

You’re not alone. Conflict can throw the whole executive function system into freeze — the opposite of task initiation (a major part of executive function).

Even small tasks can feel impossible when your nervous system is stuck.

🦴 Possum’s challenge this week: a group chat conflict about accessibility that’s still echoing hours later.

💡 Thomas’s tip – Try a sensory anchor. Put on a favorite song, hold a grounding object, or smell something familiar. Calming your body first gives your brain space to work again.

We’ll be at on September 6! Stop by the .path.wellness table for a chance to win our sensory-friendly self-care kit — featuring a weighted plush possum from , Loop earplugs, and Spek fidgets.
