We had a blast at our annual resident retreat this weekend! Great discussions about the program, team building on the cat walk high beam, some beach volleyball, and of course a bonfire and s'mores.

Last up but certainly not least for our intern introductions is Danielle Metzbower!

Danielle comes to us originually from Rockville, Maryland after completing her medical education at the University of Maryland. She's already kicked off her year with the team by spending time on our facial plastics/otology and rhinology/laryngology services! We're looking forward to her coming back to our service on her first consult block at the end of the month!

🌟 Welcome, Nicole M. Fowler, MD, FACS! 🌟

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Nicole Fowler to the University of Virginia Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. She is an Associate Professor, head and neck surgical oncologist and reconstructive specialist, joining us from University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University, where she dedicated over a decade to caring for patients. Dr. Fowler’s expertise spans head and neck cancer surgery and microvascular reconstruction, with a focus on restoring function and supporting patients and families through every step of treatment.

Outside the OR, Dr. Fowler enjoys exploring the outdoors with her husband and three sons, and looks forward to discovering all that Virginia has to offer.

UVA Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery’s own Drs. Sam Oyer, Jim Daniero, and Brad Kesser served as Examiners for the ABOHNS (American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery) Oral Board Exam this weekend!
This milestone event was the first time that a completely overhauled examination process was used. Real world candidate-submitted cases were used, marking an important evolution in relevance and safety of board certification. Many thanks to these outstanding physicians for volunteering to serve the public good and their dedication to upholding the highest standards for the next generation of Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeons. Also great to see former UVA OtoHNS Chair, Dr. Cantrell, recognized for his service to the Board as former Executive Director of the ABOHNS.

Congratulations to Dr. David Shonka! He is 1 of a total of just 217 surgeons who earned the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) for Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery on the initial exam administered in April 2025. This new designation recognizes specialized expertise in the field. He truly is a master of head & neck endocrine surgery! 🏅

Last week we had a fantastic micro lab where we practiced microvascular anastamoses and primary neurorrhaphy with Drs Oyer, Fedder, Garneau, Dowling and our new head and neck division chief Dr. Fowler!

Residents had the chance to perform micro with direct faculty feedback in real time! As part of our education curriculum we have regular practical labs and cadaver labs. One of the highlights of our educational curriculum!

Introducing the first of our interns! Bao Sciscent!

Bao is originally from New York and went to Penn State for medical school. She's been crushin' it on her first months of rotations in the ICU and radiology/rad onc but we're looking forward to having her on our service!

Outside of ENT, Bao likes strength training and finding new coffee spots and restaurants around town.
