Inspiring Stories from our Residents: Margaret and Dick: Finding Ease in a New Chapter

Margaret and Dick had downsized significantly before leaving Northern Virginia, which made the transition easier. Dick laughs when he describes Margaret’s approach, affectionately calling her “a non-sentimental tornado.”

In honor of Black History Month, last week our residents visited the historic Jefferson School for their current exhibition, Finally Remembered: The Black Patriots of Central Virginia, curated by Dr. Shelley Viola Murphy. A special thank you to Dr. Andrea Douglas, Executive Director, for guiding our tour.

The American Revolution began on April 19, 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and ended on September 3, 1783, with the Treaty of Paris. It was carried out by the thirteen British colonies in North America. After an eight-year long war, these colonies won their independence and went on to form the United States of America.

Between 6,500 and 9,000 people of African descent participated in the Revolution on the Patriot side, while as many as 20,000 fought with the British. Most African Americans joined the British with the hopes of becoming freed men. Black American patriots took part in nearly all the major battles, including the final engagement, the Siege of Yorktown.

Please join Dr. Shelley Viola Murphy on Wednesday March 4th at 2pm in the Rotunda to learn more about her astounding research to unveil the importance of Black Patriots of Central Virginia serving in the Revolutionary War.

At today’s WCBR Artist Talk, we had the privilege of hearing from one of our associates, Hoover W. Major, a Certified Nursing Medication Technician who serves with dedication in our healthcare areas. Beyond his compassionate work with residents, Hoover carries a remarkable artistic story shaped by resilience, culture, and global experience.

Born in Liberia, he discovered his love for art early in life, with a natural gift for drawing that grew into mastery across many forms, including abstract, realism, surrealism, and political cartoons, among others. His talent led him to serve as an illustrator for the Ministry of Education in the Republic of Liberia, and his artwork has since been featured in public and private collections across Africa, Europe, North America, the Middle East, Australia, East Asia, and cities including Zurich, Geneva, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, and Charlottesville.

From 1990–1998, Hoover taught art in both Liberia and the United States, using creativity as a bridge to help refugee children and traumatized adults explore love, forgiveness, and peace. He shared, “My art is simple; it mirrors society and exemplifies past to present cultures.”

A sampling of Hoover’s artwork is on display this month at WCBR’s Gallery Walk, and we are honored to celebrate the extraordinary talent he brings to us. His story enriches our community, and his artistry inspires all who have the chance to experience it.

The WCBR Foundation was delighted to support a special baking day in our Catered Living neighborhoods. Thanks to generous contributions to the Health and Well-Being Across the Continuum Fund, each of our three Catered Living kitchens received new baking supplies to make the day extra meaningful. Heather Rechner, our wonderful Catered Living Activity Coordinator, guided residents through preparing delicious monkey bread. The kitchens were filled with laughter, teamwork, and the irresistible smell of cinnamon.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We pause to reflect on Dr. King's enduring message of compassion, justice, and unity. He reminded the world that every act of kindness strengthens the bonds between us, and that hope grows when we lift one another up. His words continue to guide us: “The time is always right to do what is right.”

May we all carry Dr. King’s spirit forward through service, empathy, and a commitment to caring for one another.

A Remarkable Milestone at WCBR!

This January, we are honored to celebrate not one, but two extraordinary residents who are turning 100 years old, Penny Goodsill and Charlie Flora.

Reaching a century of life is an achievement that reflects resilience, wisdom, humor, and countless stories gathered along the way. Penny and Charlie have each contributed so much to the spirit of our community, and we are grateful for the joy, perspective, and kindness they continue to share with all of us.

As we mark this special occasion, we invite everyone to join us in wishing them a heartfelt Happy 100th Birthday. May their days be filled with love, comfort, and celebration as we honor this incredible milestone.

Cheers to a century well lived, and to the memories still to come!
