"Being a patient in a hospital is a humbling experience. I was in a foreign environment where I felt my every need depended on the willingness of someone else. Anaiya spent a great deal of time with me, and I felt as if I was her only priority. She helped me to feel human, understood, and 'not alone' — and for that I am extremely grateful!"

's BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award is an award dedicated to celebrating the team members who work alongside our nurses delivering expert, compassionate care. 🐝

Today, we're proud to honor Anaiya Roberts, CNA. Anaiya was nominated by a patient for providing emotional care and comfort as they navigated the post-operative healing process. We're incredibly proud to have her on our team!

Scientists found that immune cells called microglia play an essential role in determining how well capillaries deliver blood and nourishment to our brains.

Problems with these microglia could be contributing to failing brain health. Targeting them could help us prevent or reverse diseases like Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, and even some cases of Parkinson’s.

Joseph Park, MD doesn’t need to see any more replays. The first time the UVA Health Department of Orthopedic Surgery foot and ankle division chief saw Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton fall to the floor in pain during the NBA Finals was more than enough.

“While many people were fascinated by the video clip of his Achilles (tendon) rupturing in slow motion,” Park said, “I am truly unable to watch as I know what these athletes will go through for the next several months.”

As people experiment with alcohol alternatives, we’ve seen an explosion of products hit our social media feeds and grocery store shelves. In bright, friendly colors and with fun names, they proclaim their ability to calm, relax, and brighten our moods in all-natural, nonalcoholic ways. But are these mood enhancers truly all that?

🥤 We spoke to registered dietitian Carole Havrila to find out. Check out what she had to say at https://bit.ly/40ghEET

Today, we're proud to honor Lacey Greer, a health unit coordinator with acute cardiology. According to her colleagues, Lacey "operates like an executive assistant to each RN," volunteering to take on tasks as the only non-clinical team member on the unit working weekends. We're incredibly grateful for Lacey's willingness to help ease the burden of her fellow team members and go above and beyond her coordinator responsibilities.

We see a wide range of ages and abilities in the lab. Some are in the best shape of their lives. But many have gotten off track--maybe due to work, kids, injury, or, as in this article, a running partner moved away and everything changed.

So many good lessons in this article!

You had us at "We feel as curious and questing and alive as the brilliant undergraduates we engage with..." Thank you, Mary Esselman, for sharing your discoveries with us, as you ask "who’s out there to tell me what the heck is going on with me and what I can do about it?" We really enjoyed being part of the journey for Mary and Margaret and look forward to hearing about all of their successes in future blogs.

By Mary Esselman This goes out to all of our UVA colleagues, alumni, parents and friends who might be riding the hormone merry-go-round called menopause. Or perimenopause. Or that one-eyed paint-peeling pony barely moving up or down, post menopause.Look, the only thing that pauses is the period. The...
