5 years ago today I was involved in a horrific accident that nearly claimed my life.
I suffered 23 broken bones, both of my lungs collapsed and my heart stopped... I died.
Thankfully, a few amazing people who witnessed the accident rushed by my side, assessed me and began CPR. These people performed hands only CPR on me until the paramedics were able to get on scene and take over. Several minutes after the paramedics took over they were able to get my heart going again.
11 months after bystander CPR helped save my life, I became an American Red Cross instructor.
1 year after bystander CPR helped save my life, I taught my first CPR class.
Every year since, I have celebrated being alive by hosting a free hands only CPR class.
To the people who stopped and gave my a fighting chance, Thank you!
Thank you for giving me 5 more amazing years with my family.

If you have never been
First-Aid/CPR/AED certified or your certification has expired, please take a class.

Check - Call - Care

Do you know what to do if you witness someone suddenly collapse?

CHECK the scene for safety.
CHECK the victim for responsiveness and breathing using the shout, tap shout method.
If the victim is unresponsive and not breathing normally direct someone to CALL 911 or CALL 911 yourself.
Then provide CARE by giving chest compressions.

Having people trained in this simple skill can put more cardiac arrest victim's within minutes of life saving care.

Extreme heat kills more people every year than any other weather event in the U.S. Let that soak in!

Heat waves are becoming more frequent and intense, AND lasting longer because of the climate crisis. We might not be able to control the weather, but we can take steps to protect ourselves and prevent heat-related illnesses and death.

If you’re experiencing extreme heat in your area, make sure to:

- Verify that your air conditioning at home is working properly and that you’re not only relying on electric fans to stay cool.

- Locate public places with air conditioning like a cooling center, where you can go if your home is too hot.

- Check on loved ones and neighbors who may live alone and don’t have air conditioning.

On July 7th, 2020 I was involved in a horrific accident that nearly claimed my life. I suffered 23 broken bones, both of my lungs collapsed and my heart stopped. These bystanders performed hands only CPR on me until the paramedics were able to get on scene and take over. Several minutes after the paramedics took over they were able to get my heart going again. Without CPR, I wouldn't be alive.

In the heat of the moment during summer fun, don't miss these heat stroke symptoms. Knowing the steps to treat it could save a life.

❗ If someone is feeling weak, vomiting or has moist or flushed skin, you should get them someplace cooler and:

1. First, call 911.
2. Then, immerse the person up to their neck in cold water.
3. Or, apply cold, wet towels to their skin.
4. Finally, apply ice packs over the towels and fan the person.
