You know the newborn hearing screening program that has helped change lives? It’s been cut.

As a deafblind audiologist, I know how life-changing early identification is — and how devastating its loss could be.

The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program helped catch hearing loss at 3 months instead of 3 years. That meant babies could access language, support, and thrive. Now? The federal cuts have wiped out the part of the CDC that made this coordination possible.

We can’t afford to lose this and we must fight to keep this essential program in place. Want to help? Tell your lawmakers to protect EHDI!

You Can Make a Difference: Call your congressional representative to help restore CDC funding for EHDI, protecting newborn hearing screenings and intervention. At the top right is a megaphone.

Today is National Microtia Awareness Day!

Some facts about microtia - Microtia is a congenital birth defect that occurs when one or both ears do not fully develop or are physically missing. Microtia is often accompanied by Aural Atresia – when the ear canals are underdeveloped or absent, resulting in hearing loss. Many children have associated craniofacial challenges, known as craniofacial microsomia, which affect the symmetry of the jawline causing oral challenges and a slight crooked smile. In the United States, Microtia and Aural Atresia affect 1 in every 6,000 births which is approximately 663 babies born each year. There are an estimated 54,000 individuals currently living in the United States with Microtia and Atresia.

Enjoyed the energy of the first week back at school last week! 🏫 A few people have asked me lately how many schools I cover as ECCS’ educational audiologist. I work with students from birth through 22 across the district. We have 15 public schools in the district and also serve students at non-public schools, daycares, and through home visits.

Here are some of the many stops I made the last few days 😊
