Over the years, our teachers have found that most people walk in a series of forward falls. The impact of each step is an assault to all the weight-bearing joints in the body, including the spine. In fact, the natural human gait has become rare enough in our societies to merit a special name: GLIDEWALKING

Do you experience back pain from standing? 🤔

Take a look at these two images and compare how you stand. Notice the difference in the shape of the back and how it affects the spine.

On the left, we have a store mannequin, a model often used in the fashion industry. Its back is swayed with the pelvis, shoulders, and head pushed forward. This position compresses the lumbar spine when the hips are tucked forward, causing the highlighted muscles (in red) to work under excessive long-term strain.

On the right, we see a Greek statue of a woman with a straight lower back and relaxed ribs that align with the torso. This posture restores the spine’s length and allows the muscles to function healthily.

At the Gokhale Method, we teach how to anchor your ribs to eliminate sway and achieve a J-spine shape, similar to the woman in the statue. This orientation restores healthy length in the lumbar area, alleviating compression of the discs, nerves, and vertebrae.
