Triggerpoint Dry Needling (TDN)is a treatment used by physical therapists to help relieve muscle pain and tightness.

In simple terms:
A very thin needle is gently inserted into a tight “knot” in a muscle. This knot—called a trigger point—can cause pain, stiffness, or even pain that travels to other areas. The needle helps the muscle relax, improves blood flow, and tells the nervous system to “reset” the muscle.
This is different from acupuncture, which is based on traditional Eastern Medicine techniques targeting energy fields (meridians) to restore energy balance (Qi)

Key points:

No medication is injected (that’s why it’s called dry needling).

The needle is much thinner than a typical shot.

It targets muscle knots that won’t relax on their own.
•May be used with Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim)

The goal is to reduce pain, improve movement, and help muscles work normally again.

What it feels like:
You may feel a brief pinch or a quick muscle twitch. Some soreness afterward is common, similar to how you feel after a workout, and usually fades within a day or two

Improving hip mobility has been critical in self management of my low back pain!

8 years after a traumatic fall, I still occasionally have bouts of low back pain, especially after periods of prolonged sitting and inactivity.

So I speak from experience when I say MOTION IS LOTION!
These are my 2 go-to exercises if I've had extended periods of sitting.

Some things to consider:
-Start with your hands by your side to add stability during and progress to hands clasped together at chest or reaching overhead
-when performing the sitkneel, be sure to squeeze through the glutes and try to minimize use of momentum to help you up

As always, ask your favorite physio if these are right for you!

Low Back Pain.

Over half the adults in the United States have reported some degree of low back pain.

And, honestly, low back pain has some of the worst outcomes when it comes to BOTH surgical or conservative care.

There are many reasons for this, and no single answer to solve the problem. Things to consider are:
-Personal history of injury
-Beliefs of disability
-Environmental factors (work duties, ergonomics, surface type, equipment use)
-Movement pattern bias
-Familial history

Although the exercises above work for some, they are not for everyone! Contact a trusted Physical Therapist to identify the best way to manage you pain and get you back to doing what you love!
