Many times we long for more connection in our primary relationship. Often we also are exhausted by conflict that seems to loop and is destructive. This post encourages shifting your intention to a solid foundation that feels safe and secure, which then positions you for greater connection and navigating the ongoing conflict inherent in any relationship.

I hope you might take a few minutes to read and consider sharing and/or joining in or sharing about the upcoming marriage retreat happening just outside of Chattanooga on August 16th referenced in this post!!🫶

I love a good podcast or book. They can be really educational and empowering, but sometimes you can throw all the best advice at a relationship and it falls flat because there has been too much hurt. Most couples never start out wanting to hurt each other. There are emotional needs that are just longing to be met and we can have a hard time expressing that to each other. The frustration that results can often become destructive. Therapy can help heal what has happened and foster new ways of reaching that connection you crave with each other.

Did you know that studies have shown that the more critical and contemptuous the language a couple uses with each other, the more often they get sick? Recently, my son's third grade class did an experiment with salt water. They spoke kindly to one dish of salt water and unkindly to the other dish. Once the water evaporated and the salt was left behind, the salt that had been spoken to harshly had x's on each crystal. Fascinating! The power of our words cannot be understated. Want to shift your relationship to a place that feels better? Be intentional about compliments and appreciation.

Sometimes you will not know if a therapist is the right fit for you until you have a session or two together. However, researching several therapists, their approach and training and general feel of their website and social media can help narrow it down for you. Client testimonials can also be a helpful resource.

We all have emotional needs and long for those needs to be met. One of the biggest shifts I see in relationships is when people get in touch with those needs and ask them to be met in a clear, vulnerable and kind way, and in turn their partner learns to be open, loving and receptive to those requests. So often, we are unaware that these needs are simmering under the surface and we go to work to get them met in unhealthy or damaging ways. Sometimes childhood baggage has to be dealt with so we can deeply understand that we have those needs and it is ok to express them. Common emotional needs are acceptance, affection, appreciation, approval, attention, comfort, encouragement, respect, security and support. I think it is always an interesting exercise in self-reflection to think about what needs were met in childhood or what needs are really important to you today. This could be a great conversation to have with your partner to get deeper with each other.
