I was in the process of writing another post and all of a sudden my screen refreshed and everything I'd worked on disappeared. I clicked around to try and find what I wrote, but it was gone.

An odd thing happened next. I immediately switched tabs and began mindless scrolling on a YouTube - looking for a distraction. After about a minute I paused to take a moment and contemplate: "How did I get here?"

Naturally, a lot happened in those few minutes. You see, I was not actually loving the post I was working on. So my mind was primed for giving up at the first sign of resistance. When my writing disappeared, I felt both annoyed and relieved. Then my mind began throwing painful thoughts about my worth as a person, worker, writer, man. As soon as the painful thoughts showed up I immediately attempted to avoid the pain by leaving my work.

Does this happen to you ever? Sometimes it's helpful to take a pause and reflect on the last few minutes. Do you need to course correct into more meaningful choices? Try it out today and let me know how it goes.

At church yesterday we read the greatest commandment and I was struck by a pair of words that is often glossed over. “And love your neighbor AS YOURSELF.” I’m not sure about you, but I’ve rarely heard a pastor highlight those two words. They’ll frequently talk about loving God and loving others, and rightfully so. We need to make sure that we’re doing those two things. It just seems to me that if I don’t love myself very well, what does that mean about how I’m going to love my neighbor.
If I hate much of myself, my waistline, my patchy beard, my s*x life (or lack there of), my thought and emotions, my work ethic, etc., what will that mean about how I’m equipped to love my neighbor who has these same issues.
So often we eviscerate ourselves thinking that we can shame the problems away, and all we end up doing is diminishing our sense of self and weakening the love we can offer others. What if we chose to love ourselves well and from that platform we then loved others. If we aimed to see our own worth as God does - His Own Image.
You are the Image of God! You matter! You’re inherently so full of worth that you’re the creation that God chose to represent him. Imagine how this belief would change the way you approach self-improvement, love, and your relationship with God Himself. What’s one area of your life you tend to hate about yourself that you’d like to see with love instead?
