I was in the process of writing another post and all of a sudden my screen refreshed and everything I'd worked on disappeared. I clicked around to try and find what I wrote, but it was gone.
An odd thing happened next. I immediately switched tabs and began mindless scrolling on a YouTube - looking for a distraction. After about a minute I paused to take a moment and contemplate: "How did I get here?"
Naturally, a lot happened in those few minutes. You see, I was not actually loving the post I was working on. So my mind was primed for giving up at the first sign of resistance. When my writing disappeared, I felt both annoyed and relieved. Then my mind began throwing painful thoughts about my worth as a person, worker, writer, man. As soon as the painful thoughts showed up I immediately attempted to avoid the pain by leaving my work.
Does this happen to you ever? Sometimes it's helpful to take a pause and reflect on the last few minutes. Do you need to course correct into more meaningful choices? Try it out today and let me know how it goes.
