Reminders for the New Hospice Certifying Physician Claim Edit: Effective June 3, 2024
Effective June 3, 2024, (delayed from May 1, 2024) for claim 'From' dates on or after this date, CMS implemented edits to enforce a new rule that would deny hospice claims if the certifying physician entered in the Attending field on the claim is not in the Provider Enrollment Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) as an enrolled or opted-out physician. The hospice certifying physician need to be enrolled/opted-out at the time they make the certification or recertification of hospice care for a patient. Please review this updated article and share it with your staff.

Please take a minute to make your voice be heard! Home Health and Hospice are the most cost effective form of health care and provided in the setting where most people desire to be.. in their home! CMS continuing to cut reimbursement ultimately has a negative impact on access to this care.

OASIS-E Effective Date 1/1/23 - Based on M0090
per CMS: Please note that the effective date for OASIS-E is January 1, 2023. The version of OASIS that should be collected will be based on the M0090 – Date Assessment Completed. The M0090 date is the last date that information used to complete the comprehensive assessment and determine OASIS coding was gathered by the assessing clinician and documentation of the specific responses was completed.
CMS wants to make clear that with this transition to OASIS-E, there is no need for the use of artificial M0090 dates. All assessments with a M0090 - Date Assessment Completed on or before December 31, 2022, including the last 5 days of 2022 must be completed with OASIS-D1. This is true even when the first day of the new certification period is on or after January 1, 2023.
All assessments with a M0090 - Date Assessment Completed on or after January 1, 2023, must be completed with OASIS-E. This is true even when the assessment was initiated in 2022.
