Most people think postpartum doulas are just there to hold baby so mom can get things done around the house, and even though that is possible if she chooses so, we are so much more than that! As a postpartum doula, I am there to

•Take care of baby while you try to rest
•Do simple tasks around the house, such as dishes, laundry, or sweeping
•Meal prep with provided ingredients
•Ensure you get a nice hot shower without worrying
•Support your desires on how you feed your baby
•Encourage you to know you’re doing the best job

and so much more from birth to 6 weeks postpartum!

As your doula, I will be there every step of the way in your postpartum journey. Mama, you see important. ❤️

“New mothers need more than just self-help books, free meals, and less tasks to do. Postpartum mothers need a village - a community of friends, family, and perhaps a postpartum doula, who come together to give her support in a way that fits her needs while using their respective gifts, allowing her voice to be heard.”

Mama, never forget that you were chosen for such a time as this. You were personally hand-picked by God to be the mother of your precious miracle. Whether you are a first-time mom or not, prenatal or postpartum, you are special, you are cared for, and you are loved.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read this book. I pray I can guide mamas in their time of need and do as the Lord has chosen me for.

Merry Christmas to you and yours this holiday season! You were created to love and be loved. You are amazing. Thank you, Jesus, for coming as a baby long ago. Always remember the true reason we celebrate today! ❤️

This. Full of love and joy. Mama, you ARE in control of your labor. ❤️

❤️ Love at first sight ❤️
This is a beautiful example of oxytocin at work 😍
The hormone oxytocin, known as the love hormone, is at its highest just after the birth. This facilitates bonding (amongst other things).
Just look at how this baby is looking into the eyes of his mother - this is also due to a calm unmedicated birth, so that the process is not inhibited in any way.
Be educated. Be informed. Be in control

This is beautiful. If you need someone just to sit in the room with you, it’s so much more than that, and I will gladly do it.

This was written so perfectly:

Walk into a room while I am supporting a birth and you might think that I am just sitting there doing nothing. I won’t be talking. I won’t be touching the client. I won’t be using anything in my bag.

So what am I doing exactly?

🪑 Watching mom’s breathing and sometimes breathing loudly alongside her to remind her to slow down her breath

🪑 Scanning mom’s body during the contraction to make sure that she isn’t holding any tension

🪑 Monitoring the temperature and lighting to create the peaceful environment that she desires

🪑 Calculating how long it has been since she emptied her bladder

🪑 Thinking about how long she has been in her current position and thinking about the next position that she might try

🪑 Timing contractions to see if they are longer, stronger and closer together

🪑 Thinking about when mom and her partner last had a snack

🪑 Reviewing her preferences to make sure that everything is going according to her plan

🪑 Giving the couple space to connect on an intimate level (allowing for oxytocin) and/or guiding the partner to be the lead support

🪑 Updating notes and capturing labor flow

Sometimes just being fully present is enough. Sometimes just knowing I am there in close proximity is all mom needs to be able to relax and focus on what she needs to do. Sometimes just holding space for them in an unbiased manner allows for a noticeable shift in the energy of the room.

And the list goes on….

Hi, everyone! My name is Abby Medford, and I am a Certified Doula offering Birth, Postpartum, and Lactation services! I am a graduate of Lee University with a Bachelors in Health Science, and I have a deep desire to serve moms in the greater Chattanooga area! ❤️

I have always had a love for women’s health and babies, even as a child, as I would naturally gravitate towards adorable little ones and expecting moms.

In 2019, I spent six months serving as a medical missionary in Honduras at The Jungle Hospital. During that time, I was able to assist in a few births, but during one birth in particular, I was assigned to be with mom, which meant I was to walk with her around the hospital, keep track of when she had contractions and how long they lasted, and be a shoulder to lean on if she needed a break. Our doctor said to me, “Abby, you’d be an amazing doula one day,” but at that moment, those words really didn’t have any significance to me. However, two years later, I began learning what they meant and decided to pursue certification. What a joy it has been!

As I walk this journey that the Lord has placed before me, I hope to love on and serve each mom, her support system, and new little one as much as I can. From pregnancy, to birth and postpartum, I am here to care for mom and beyond!
