Farewell & Good Luck to Another Great Summer Law Clerk: Cayman Forbes!

What law school do you attend?
I attend Washington and Lee School of Law.

What was your favorite experience as a Law Clerk this Summer?
I especially enjoyed being a part of multiple cases that were in different stages in court. This way I was able to see the best strategies and techniques for each type of case and contribute in different ways.

Why were you interested in helping people obtain their disability benefits?
I have my own personal experiences with disability in my family, and I wanted to work in an area of law that helped people.

What did you like most about Chattanooga?
I loved getting to take my dog on walks through Coolidge Park and stop and get a coffee at Rembrandt's each weekend. Chattanooga also had so many great restaurants and cafes to try.

What law school do you attend?
I attend Belmont College of Law.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I am most looking forward to gaining practical experience in litigation and gaining insight into the legal profession by working under experienced and knowledgeable attorneys.

Why are you interested in helping people obtain their disability benefits?
I am particularly drawn to helping people obtain their disability benefits because my uncle is permanently disabled from a car accident. Through his experience, I have gained an understanding of the hardships that a disability can cause for an individual and their family. Helping people attain the benefits they deserve is a meaningful way I can serve within the legal field and assist those in need.

What do you like most about Chattanooga so far?
What I like most about being in Chattanooga for the summer is the opportunity to spend time with my family and friends.

Our client was employed as a speech-language pathologist, helping kids with developmental issues. But after contracting COVID-19, she began to suffer from dysautomia, fatigue, weakness, and GI issues. Although the Standard paid her claim for a short time, it denied her benefits, claiming she could return to her own occupation. We appealed and submitted evidence, including objective testing, that demonstrated our client could not perform any level of work due to her dysautonomia and fatigue. Standard overturned the decision and paid her claim.

I am most looking forward to exploring the unique realm of LTD and ERISA law.

Why are you interested in helping people obtain their disability benefits?
Knowing that some of my family members have had to go through the oftentimes difficult process of obtaining disability benefits, helping others get the benefits they deserve sounds like a great way to spend the summer.

What do you like most about Chattanooga so far?
Being from Chattanooga, I am most excited about spending time with my family and friends who still live in the city.

We won long-term disability benefits from Hartford for our client with lumbar disc herniation, lumbosacral spondylosis, lumbar radiculopathy, and inflammation of the sacroiliac joint. We were able to get Hartford to approve benefits after they initially denied them, saying our client could perform 6 other occupations, including his own light-level occupation as a sales representative. Our appeal evidence, which included updated medical records, a functional capacity evaluation report, and a vocational evaluation report, proved that our client does not have light, or even sedentary, level physical abilities, and Hartford overturned its denial.
