🦷 FAQ Friday: What causes discoloration besides coffee and wine?

We hear this one a lot, and while coffee and red wine are major stain culprits, they’re not the only ones!

Other sneaky causes of tooth discoloration:

🔸 Tea – especially darker varieties like black or chai
🔸 Soda & sports drinks – sugar + acid = stain city
🔸 Certain medications – like antibiotics or antihistamines
🔸 To***co use – smoking or chewing
🔸 Aging – enamel naturally wears down over time
🔸 Poor oral hygiene – plaque buildup = dull, yellowing teeth

The good news? Regular cleanings, good at-home care, and professional whitening can help keep your smile bright! 😁✨

🦷 Trivia Thursday - Answer 🦷

And the correct answer is… B) 6 years old!

Most kiddos start getting their first permanent molars (also called "6-year molars") around age 6—even though those baby teeth are still hanging on in front!

These molars are super important for chewing and forming a strong foundation for your adult bite, so make sure they're getting lots of love with brushing, flossing, and regular checkups! 🪥

🦷 What We Treat Wednesday: Tooth Erosion 🦷

Did you know that the enamel on your teeth—the hardest substance in your body—can wear away over time? This process is called tooth erosion, and it can lead to sensitivity, discoloration, and even cavities.

Common causes of erosion include:

Acidic foods & drinks (like soda, citrus fruits, and sports drinks)

☑ Frequent heartburn or acid reflux

☑ Dry mouth (less saliva = less protection!)

☑ Over-brushing with abrasive toothpaste

The good news? We can help! From recommending enamel-strengthening products to applying protective treatments and monitoring your enamel at check-ups, we’re here to keep your smile strong and healthy. 💪

Have questions about enamel loss or tooth sensitivity? Let’s chat at your next visit—we’ve got your smile covered!

🦷 Tooth Tip Tuesday 🦷

Give your mouth a break — limit the snacking!

We get it… snacks are life. 😋 But did you know that frequent snacking gives cavity-causing bacteria more opportunities to attack your teeth?

Every time you eat, your mouth becomes more acidic — and if you're constantly grazing, your teeth never get a chance to recover. 😬

✅ Stick to regular meal times
✅ Choose tooth-friendly snacks (like cheese, veggies, or nuts!)
✅ Drink water between snacks to rinse away food particles

Your smile will thank you for the break! 💙

MEET SKYLER:

Hey, I'm Skyler, one of the Dental Assistants here at HFD. Also, known as your official tooth cheerleader, x-ray wrangler, and all around "let's get through this together" person.

I graduated from Chattanooga State Community College in 2023 where I received my certification in Coronal Polishing, monitoring Nitrous Oxide, and placing Sealants. I love creating a calm and welcoming environment, whether it's helping ease nerves before a procedure, cracking a joke to keep spirits high, or simply offering a friendly smile!

I have enjoyed getting to know all of our patients here at HFD. We have a great community. I love seeing so many familiar faces with my family and friends, and making new ones!

Outside of the office I am active in my church, and teach in our Children's ministry. I enjoy spending time and laughing with family and friends. I enjoy trying new things whether that's traveling or trying a new restaurants and of course cheering on our TN Vols!

I am truly blessed to be apart of the HFD family and so grateful for all of our patients! I can't wait to see what the future brings!

🦷 FAQ Friday 🦷

Q: Is it safe to go to the dentist while pregnant? 🤰🏼
A: Yes — and it’s actually really important!

Seeing your dentist during pregnancy is not only safe, it helps protect both your health and your baby’s. Hormonal changes can increase the risk of:
🔹 Gum disease
🔹 Tooth decay
🔹 Pregnancy gingivitis

Regular cleanings, exams, and even some necessary treatments (with your OB's okay) are safe throughout pregnancy — especially during the second trimester.

✅ Be sure to tell us you’re expecting
✅ Let us know about any medications or concerns
✅ And don’t skip your checkups!

Your smile matters during every stage of life — and we’re here to help you keep it healthy. 💙👶🏼🦷🎀

🦷 Tooth Tip Tuesday 🦷

Be gentle — your teeth aren't tile grout! 😅

When it comes to brushing, scrubbing harder doesn’t mean cleaner. In fact, brushing too hard can actually wear down your enamel and irritate your gums.

✅ Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush
✅ Let the bristles do the work
✅ Think gentle circles, not back-and-forth scrubbing

Your teeth and gums will thank you with a healthier, happier smile! 😁💙

MEET SUMER:

Hi, I'm Sumer! I graduated from Miller-Motte Technical College in 2015 thus starting my career in the dental field as a registered dental assistant. Since then I have obtained certification in nitrous oxide monitoring and coronal polishing. My favorite part of being a dental assistant, besides my patients, is my ability to put my patients minds at ease during their appointments and helping them get their beautiful smiles back.

Outside of work I love spending time with my family. I've been married to my husband, Nick, since 2016 - it's just the two of us and our 3 fur babies. On weekend summer nights you'll find me at the dirt race track with all my favorite racing pals. But don't let my "summer" name fool you, I am not a fan of the hot days that come during the summertime - my favorite days are cold and rainy especially when I can pile up on my chaise lounge with my dogs and read a good book.

I feel very blessed to have become a member of the HFD family and can't wait to be here for many more years!
