An Individualized Education Program (or IEP) is a custom educational plan for students with disabilities. It’s a powerful tool that can help your child thrive at school.

To get an IEP, your child must have a disability that affects how well they do at school. Some common disabilities include:

• Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
• Autism spectrum disorder
• Emotional disorders
• Problems with hearing, speech or vision

Do you think your child may benefit from an IEP? Let their school know. Talking to a school counselor or psychologist can be a good start.

You’ll then work with a team of teachers, psychologists and others to see if your child needs an IEP and create one that helps meet their needs.

It’s exciting to think about adding to your family. Here are some tips to help you plan for a healthy pregnancy:

• Talk with your doctor before you’re pregnant. Tell them about any medicine you take. They’ll tell you what’s safe to keep taking and what you should stop. They’ll also tell you any vaccines you need to protect you and your baby.
• Start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid every day before you’re pregnant. And keep taking it while you’re pregnant. Folic acid can promote healthy development for your baby.
• Take care of your mental health. If your emotions are getting in the way of your daily life, talk with your doctor. They can help connect you with resources to help you now, during your pregnancy and after your baby is born.

You can use these benefits to schedule a free ride to the doctor or pharmacy. Or, if you live near a bus stop, you may be able to get a bus pass.

Taking the bus gives you more flexibility. And you can take children with you on the bus for free. Just be sure to let Verida know how many children will come with you. Call Verida to see if you qualify.

Happy International Self-Care Day! Self-care is about more than the rare splurge. Make self-care a part of your daily routine this summer with these tips:

• Get some fresh air. Spending time outdoors can help you feel less stressed. And it’s a great way to get some exercise.
• Practice healthy habits. Eat a well-balanced diet filled with fruit and veggies. Limit how much alcohol you drink. And try to get plenty of sleep.
• Give yourself a break. Schedule some time to relax, read or do something else you enjoy. It doesn’t have to be long. Even 5 minutes can help. But try to unplug during your break. Turning off the news and logging out of social media can make it easier to unwind.
• Get support. Connect with friends, loved ones and/or a mental health specialist.

Feeling sick? If it isn’t an emergency, the ER isn’t the best place to go for care. But you have options.

• Your primary care provider (P*P) is your best choice for non-emergency care. And some P*Ps have extended office hours or offer telehealth visits.

• With BlueCare Tennessee benefits, you can also talk with a licensed nurse anytime. Just call Nurseline at 1-800-262-2873. It’s open 24/7. And they can help answer your health questions. Not sure if you need medical care or where to go for care? They can help with that, too.

• Urgent care centers can be a good backup option if you need in-person care soon and aren’t able to see your P*P. They can treat most non-emergency conditions. And some centers can do X-rays and stitches.

Remember, if you’re having a medical emergency, don’t wait. Call 911 or go to the nearest ER right away.

Summer’s a great time to go for a swim. But it’s important to keep you and your family safe when you’re around water. Stay safe this summer with these tips:

• Always keep a close eye on your child.
• Stay within an arm’s length of your child when they’re swimming or in other water.
• Don’t read, use your phone or use drugs or alcohol while you’re supervising children.
• If you’re on a boat or in natural water, like a lake, be sure everyone is wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

The new school year starts soon. Now’s a great time to be sure your child is caught up on their checkups and vaccines.

If your child hasn’t had a checkup this year, call their doctor to schedule one. This visit lets the doctor find any health problems earlier, when they can be easier to treat. Your child can get any vaccines they need during a checkup, too. Check with your child’s school to see what vaccines they may need. Then talk with your child’s doctor about those vaccines and any questions you have.

Need help making this appointment? We’re here for you. Just give us a call at the Customer Service number on the back on your Member ID card. Or message us through the CareTN app.

Your child’s eyes are an important part of their health. Being able to see well can help with your child’s learning, development and behavior. That’s why your child should have regular vision screenings. Your child’s primary care provider can do a vision screening at their next well-child visit. The doctor can tell you if your child needs to see an eye doctor for glasses or other eye issues. We cover routine vision care for children under age 21.

Did you know many kids try alcohol for the first time at home? You can help prevent underage drinking by storing alcohol safely — or not keeping it in the house at all.

If you do keep alcohol in the home, remember to:

• Lock it up or keep it out of sight. Kids are curious. Keeping alcohol locked up or in a place they can’t reach (for younger children) helps get rid of the temptation to try it.
• Talk to your kids about alcohol. Let them know how alcohol and alcohol misuse can affect their bodies and brains. And talk about how it can lead to other unsafe behaviors, like drinking and driving. Even short, honest talks can have a big impact.
• Set a good example. Children notice adult behavior. Drinking responsibly — or choosing not to drink — shows them how to make healthy choices.
