Regular breast cancer screenings can help you protect your health. These screenings can find cancer earlier, when it can be easier to treat. And they may even find cancer before you or your doctor notice any symptoms.

Women age 40 to 74 with average risk for breast cancer should get a mammogram every two years. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. The CDC says a mammogram is the best way for most women to be screened for breast cancer. Your doctor may recommend screenings more often based on your health and family history. Talk with your doctor about your screening options.

We cover breast cancer screenings at no extra cost for our members. Ask your doctor at your next checkup if it’s time for your screening.

Warmer weather means it’s a great time to get outside and get active. Walking, running, jumping rope and riding a bike are all great ways to be active outdoors. But it’s important to be safe in the heat.

These tips from the American Heart Association can help you have fun and stay safe outside.

• Try to avoid exercising outside in the afternoon. It’s usually the hottest part of the day.
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Dress for the weather. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Moisture-wicking fabrics are a plus.
• Talk with your doctor first. If you’re new to exercise or changing your routine, your doctor can help you find a safe plan for you.

This week is National Infant Immunization Week. Vaccines teach your child’s immune system to recognize a virus or bacteria. Then the immune system knows how to fight it if your child ever comes into contact with that bacteria or virus.

Vaccines can help keep your child from getting very sick from certain diseases. And they can help protect those around you, too.

Vaccines are safe and effective. They go through intense testing before they’re used.

At your child’s checkup, the doctor may recommend certain vaccines for your child based on their age. And if you have any questions about vaccines, the doctor can help answer them. Talk with your child’s doctor at their next checkup to see what vaccines your child may need.

Having a healthy pregnancy can help increase your chance of having a healthy baby. That’s why it’s important to have regular visits with your doctor while you’re pregnant.

Your doctor will check on your health and tell you about any care you may need. This might include lab tests and vaccines. And your doctor can look for issues like high blood pressure or diabetes early. That can help make them easier to treat. Your doctor will also check on your baby’s growth and health.

These visits are a good chance for you to ask any questions you have, too. You can ask about diet, exercise and preparing for birth.

Remember, every pregnancy is different. So it’s important to see your doctor regularly, even if you’ve had a baby before.

As a parent, you have a say in your child’s individualized education program (IEP). It’s important for you to work with your child’s teachers to help your child succeed. Here are some ways you can advocate for your child and have a strong partnership with their IEP team.

• Get to know the team. The team may include teachers, therapists and other specialists.
• Share what you know. You know what your child is good at and what they need extra help with. Sharing this info can help the IEP team better understand your child.
• Check for progress. Talk with your child and their team to be sure the program is helping. You can ask for an IEP meeting any time you have a concern.

Have more questions about IEPs? Contact your child’s school to learn more.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes you can have when you’re pregnant. It happens when your body doesn’t make enough insulin. That makes it harder for your body to change sugar into energy.

It usually starts around week 24 of pregnancy. You may not have any symptoms. So your doctor will often test for it when you’re between 24 and 28 weeks pregnant.

If you have this condition, your doctor will help you create a treatment plan to help keep you and your baby healthy. It’s important to follow your doctor’s treatment plan. Your doctor may also recommend medication if you need it.

This condition usually goes away after your baby is born. But it can increase your risk of getting type 2 diabetes later. Your doctor can tell you about ways to lower your risk.
