Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

“On February 14, 2025, I had a spinal stimulator placed in my spine,” shared Marilyn. “At first, I had no issues with it and didn’t realize it had become infected, and this started a downward spiral.”

Just a few weeks later, on March 7th, Marilyn experienced unimaginable heartbreak when her husband suddenly passed away while sitting beside her. Less than 24 hours later, she found herself in the hospital, suffering from hypotension, confusion, lethargy, shortness of breath, and a urinary tract infection. After being transferred between four different hospitals, doctors finally discovered the root cause: a spinal abscess.

By the time Marilyn arrived at Kindred Hospital Chattanooga, her condition was critical. She was on a ventilator, had a tracheostomy and a feeding tube, was barely conscious, and unable to move.

“Within a day, Respiratory Therapy began working to wean me off the ventilator. It took several tries, but eventually, I was able to breathe on my own again and the tracheostomy was removed.”

As her respiratory progress continued, Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy began helping her regain movement and the ability to eat again. “My progress was slow but steady. Today, I can walk, bathe and dress with assistance, and eat on my own.”

Marilyn expressed deep gratitude for the nursing team, saying, “They were always there, whether I needed pain relief or just a kind face. The atmosphere is very family-oriented; they are just good folks."

Now preparing to transfer to a rehabilitation facility to continue gaining strength, Marilyn reflects on her journey with faith and gratitude. “I give thanks to Jesus Christ and all the prayer groups who lifted me up in prayer. I’ve been told I’m a miracle.” She also credits her son and her identical twin for being her biggest cheerleaders.

“When I get home, I can’t wait to see my dog and go out with my friends. I have a new life to start, and I want to live every minute of it.”

On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their bravery has secured the freedoms we hold dear, and their memory lives on in our hearts and communities.

Let us never forget the true cost of freedom, and may we strive each day to be worthy of the sacrifices made on our behalf.

“I had been interviewing for a job and had accepted a position when I got sick, shares Ramona. “I was short of breath, extremely tired and weak. My dad took me to the hospital when my oxygen dropped to 70%. I ended up on a ventilator with a tracheostomy and a feeding tube in my stomach.

I arrived at Kindred Hospital Chattanooga not knowing what to expect. I thought I would have downtime, but I was immediately started on occupational and speech therapy. I was so happy to be able to talk and start eating again! My feeding tube site had gotten inflamed, so physical therapy had to be delayed, but once it started, I progressed fairly quickly and began walking in the hallway with assistance. Everyone at Kindred Chattanooga has been wonderful, but Brandi in Speech Therapy helped with the speaking valve so I could eat and talk. She went beyond what I expected. She is incredibly wise.

I am going to a rehabilitation hospital so I can get stronger before I go home. When I do get home, the first thing I am going to do is take a long hot shower and get the wash cap goo out of my hair! Then I will prepare for my son’s college graduation in Boston and resume my job search. Finally, I want to thank my youngest brother, my mom and my dad for all their love, support, and encouragement throughout my illness.”

“I went to the hospital for stomach pain,” shares Randy. “It evolved into a deep-burning pain, complicated by a gastric ulcer. I underwent an ex-laparotomy, which should have been fairly routine, but it had to be left open for washouts. This led to needing wound care. However, I became septic, had acute kidney injury, had a cardiac arrest, and ended up on a ventilator and a tracheostomy. I could not tolerate tube feeding in my stomach, so I had nutrition through my veins. I was extremely sick.

My road to recovery was not smooth, I had several bumps along the way. Wound care at Kindred Hospital Chattanooga played a major role in my open abdominal wound and keeping me free from further skin breakdown. It took me a bit to get off the ventilator, but Respiratory Therapy kept working with me. Finally, I did it and was able to get the tracheostomy out.

It took a while for my stomach to heal and be able to tolerate eating and drinking. Speech therapy also kept working with me until I could swallow again. Having your nutrition through the veins is not fun when all you want to do is wet your mouth and try to drink and eat anything. I started working with physical therapy and it was also a slow process. I began walking with a walker and getting around slowly. Also, I worked with occupational therapy to learn how to dress myself again.

I told the Kindred team I was going home, not to rehabilitation. They told me I had to reach the above milestones, and I did. It is all about determination, and I was determined to go home to play with my twelve grandchildren.

Finally, I want to thank my wife and children for their unwavering support through all of this. I would not have made it without their love and support.”
