Only 24% of U.S. adults are physically active and that number declines with age. It’s a common belief that aches and pains are a normal part of aging. To a certain degree, yes, recovery time is longer, and some bodily discomfort is more common in older individuals compared to a 25-year-old…but hurting everywhere, after simple daily tasks is NOT a normal part of aging. It’s the result of deconditioning when you become less active.
We believe deconditioning is the cause of many injuries, both acute and chronic. You know you’re deconditioned when once easy tasks are now difficult. You may have noticed decreased muscle tone, diminished strength, poor balance, pain in multiple areas. The hard truth is that adults become less physically active as life goes on and their time becomes more limited. But it’s not aging that’s wearing you down. It’s deconditioning from a sedentary lifestyle.
The good news is that it doesn’t take much to stay in shape! In just 21 minutes per day, you can combat the effects of deconditioning by walking, dancing, swimming, hiking, anything that gets you excited to move. If you haven’t exercised in years, then just walk. When walking becomes easy, walk faster. When that’s easy, add in some hills. You’ll feel better than ever with less pain and more energy!
Don’t fall victim to “aging” and take action now. Be Proactive 💪
