TIP TUESDAY with Dr. Delia! πŸ’‘ Everyone is sharing tips for how to have a fun fall with kids 🍁 There's even that joke that circulates asking "Got any plans for the fall?" as in the fall of civilization... πŸ˜† Here's our own spin on "fall" – Let's talk about some ways to reduce FALL risks around the home! These tips will help bring some various hazards to mind, and hopefully, some measures can be taken to secure your home and your family! πŸ€“πŸ‘
β€’Secure Furniture and Windowsβ€’
– Anchor TVs and furniture to walls
– Move cribs or chairs away from windows
– Use window guards or stops
– Never rely on window screens to keep children in
– Use safety rails on beds that are more than a couple of feet off the ground
β€’Prevent Slips and Tripsβ€’
– Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower
– Put pads under rugs to reduce slip
– Clean spills immediately
– Keep stairs and hallways clear of clutter
– Use stair gates at the top and bottom of stairs, securing them to the wall if possible
– Especially watch children just after mopping floors, and if they're wearing socks, as floors might be extra slippery
β€’Supervise Childrenβ€’
– In the bathtub
– Hold hands while they're on stairs
– Keep toddlers away from open windows
– Discourage toddlers from climbing on furniture
– Remind children not to stand in shopping carts in the store; buckle them in if necessary
– Don't put toys up in high places as punishment for children, as they may try to climb up to get it when you're not looking
β€’Outdoor Safetyβ€’
– Ensure playgrounds have shock-absorbing surfaces like sand or rubber mulch
– Teach children playground rules, such as steering clear of those on swings
– Scope out high openings of playground equipment, keep an eye on toddlers who play there
– Always wear helmets for activities like biking
– Secure backyard playground equipment so that it doesn't topple of during use
What other fall risks might we have forgotten to mention? Protect that noggin and other essential body parts and take extra measures to keep your home safe this fall, and all year long!

This morning, Collegedale Parks and Recreation organized Walk to School day with Wolftever Creek Elementary !! So many kids and their parents came to the new parking lot near Little Debbie Park, met up with teachers and school staff, and walked to school along the Greenway! It was so well organized, the kids were so excited, and we had fun passing out breakfast snacks and juice boxes to everyone! What a fun way to spend those early hours as the sun is coming up, we can't wait for next time! Collegedale Police Department were there also, keeping everyone in line and making things fun.

TIP TUESDAY with Dr. Delia! πŸ’‘ The Daycare Teacher Stories shared a sweet little post about gratitude affirmations for kids. She said, "These affirmations are simple, positive, and easy for kids to understand, helping them focus on gratitude in their daily lives." We think so too! Here's the list:
✨ I'm thankful for my family.
✨ I'm thankful for my friends.
✨ I appreciate the fun I have every day.
✨ I am grateful for my teachers.
✨ I am thankful for the sunshine.
✨ I am thankful for my healthy body.
✨ I appreciate the lessons I learn.
✨ I am grateful for the love around me.
✨ I am thankful for my home.
✨ I am thankful for the hugs I get.
✨ I appreciate the kindness of others.
✨ I am grateful for the books I read.

TIP TUESDAY with Dr. Delia! πŸ’‘ We really liked these tips from Big Life Journal about connecting with pr***en and teenage children. The idea is to provide opportunities for "side-by-side" that are not confrontational. Some examples include:
πŸ”Ή A car trip, "I'll be in the car if you want to take a ride with me!"
πŸ”Ή While a parent is brushing their teeth, "Hey, I really have to brush my teeth, come tell me about your day."
πŸ”Ή Folding laundry, "I'm just folding laundry if you feel like chatting."
πŸ”Ή Sitting on the couch, "Hey, look at this magazine/video!"
πŸ”Ή Bedtime check-ins with no direct eye-contact
Some parents think, "we have dinner together, that's a great catch-up time!" While family dinner-time is highly praised and helps a family feel togetherness, it can be a difficult time to check-in with some teens and pr***ens. There's too much pressure, it's a bigger group setting, and there's distractions. Here are some reasons why we want to find the best ways for teens or pr***ens to talk:
πŸ”Ή Side-by-side moments feel "safer" than face-to-face.
πŸ”Ή Being able to exit the conversation at their will helps them stay longer.
πŸ”Ή Physical positioning matters – direct eye contact can feel confrontational, especially for boys.
πŸ”Ή Presence is more important than pressure; space is more important than strategy.
Ultimately, we know that parents just want to be there for their kids, and we feel like we can't be there if they don't talk to us! Find ways that your kid will open up to you. We hope these ideas plant a seed and that they work out for you. For the full post by Big Life Journal, visit: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19rc5SQv9q/

TIP TUESDAY with Dr. Delia! πŸ’‘ Cold and flu season are upon us, have you talked with your child about best hand washing practices? Now is a good time to remind them! Here are a few ways to make it fun and help them remember throughout the day, especially if they are at school or with a childcare provider!
πŸ’¦ Put colorful handwashing posters near sinks!
πŸ’¦ Build it into routines: connect handwashing with activities like bathroom breaks, before meals, after outdoor play, or after coughing/sneezing or touching ones face
πŸ’¦ Make it fun: let them choose their soap, or talk about how using different soaps in different places can be fun!
πŸ’¦ Sing a song like "Happy Birthday!" while scrubbing hands with soap before rinsing
Also, teaching kids to learn to not touch their faces will help them not spread germs. It can be hard to teach children not to touch their nose, but the sooner they can learn to grab a tissue, the better! And, using the inside of the collar of ones shirt is another useful way to itch eyes or noses; it helps reduce touching ones face with their germy fingers, in turn reducing the chance of catching those germs!
As always, if you catch some kind of bug, we have same day sick visit appointments available. Stay healthy!
