“A Heated Situation: The Furnace Fiasco”

Now I ain’t sayin’ I’m a licensed HVAC technician… but I do have a socket set, a YouTube account, and a dangerously high level of confidence.

It all started this past Tuesday when I woke up and the house felt like the inside of a deep freezer wrapped in a mountain breeze. The dog’s water dish had a thin layer of ice on it, and Dazzle the hound looked at me like I’d failed him as both a dog owner and a human being.

Naturally, I stomped down to the basement, flashlight in my mouth and confidence in my heart, to “give the furnace a once-over.” What happened next is a little fuzzy, but let’s just say I might have mistaken the thermostat wire for a mouse-chewed spaghetti noodle. A few sparks, one loud pop, and a good bit of hollerin’ later, the basement smelled like burnt toast and regret.

That’s when I remembered three things:
1. Furnace repairs should be left to professionals.
2. My furnace guy’s number is taped to the fridge—right under the emergency peanut butter stash.
3. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

The repair guy came out, gave me a look I know well by now—equal parts pity and amusement—and fixed the mess in under 30 minutes. Said it was a $90 repair that could’ve stayed that way if I hadn’t turned it into a $220 adventure.

So here’s the lesson, folks:
If your furnace goes cold, don’t go fiddlin’. Just pick up the phone.

Well shoot fire! Now lemme show ya what I shoulda done…
