APIC is a grant funded program created by the University at Buffalo Department of Psychiatry that provides an intermediate level of care created through a community-based, psychiatrist-directed Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) Diversion Team partnered with existing local agencies. APIC serves children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury, with or without accompanying mental illness. We provide several unique services including intermediate level care coordination, medication management, dually diagnosed wraparound services, and access to mobile psychiatric care. While APIC makes every effort to support the families of all referrals, it is primarily focused on meeting the needs of individuals who can not be served in traditional mental health settings and who would likely require hospitalization or residential placement in the absence of our services.

Every child’s path is different; and progress rarely follows a straight line. At APIC, we work with partners to support children with complex needs by focusing on individualized care, informed guidance, and coordinated support across settings. When care teams are aligned, children are better positioned to grow, learn, and thrive in ways that are meaningful to them.

This story is a powerful reminder of how limiting expectations can shape outcomes. A mother was once told her autistic son would only be capable of a narrow future; an assumption that proved deeply inaccurate.

At APIC, we see firsthand how individualized support, informed care, and strong partnerships can change trajectories for children on the autism spectrum. When systems focus on potential rather than predictions, families and care teams are better positioned to support meaningful growth and long-term success.

When individuals speak openly about their autism diagnoses, it helps broaden understanding and challenge outdated perceptions. This article highlights several public figures who have shared their experiences, reminding us that autism exists across all backgrounds, ages, and professions.

At APIC, we see every day how important understanding, acceptance, and informed support are; especially for children and families navigating complex care needs. Greater visibility leads to better conversations, stronger systems of care, and more meaningful support for those on the spectrum.

Some of the most impactful work in autism care happens behind the scenes; reviewing complex cases, supporting care teams, and helping partners navigate challenging situations.

At APIC, our role is to bring experience, perspective, and clarity to moments where care systems feel stretched. By supporting the professionals doing this work every day, we help strengthen outcomes for children and families across the spectrum.

We entered 2026 the same way we closed out last year; on the road, supporting partners and strengthening systems of care near and far.

As the year gets underway, APIC remains focused on sharing expertise, filling care gaps, and working alongside organizations to support families and care teams wherever the need exists. We’re looking forward to another year of collaboration, connection, and meaningful impact.

The holiday season brings joy, but it also brings added stress, shifting routines, and increased demands on caregivers supporting children with complex needs.

At APIC, we work alongside families, partners, and care teams to ensure caregivers have the tools, communication, and support they need to navigate this time of year with confidence and compassion.

Supporting caregivers strengthens the entire system of care. 💙

Holidays bring excitement and togetherness, but for many children on the autism spectrum, the changes in routine, new environments, and sensory overload can be overwhelming.

This excellent guide outlines practical ways to help, including using visual calendars, prepping the child in advance, offering quiet breaks, and bringing comfort items.

At APIC, we believe simple planning + thoughtful supports can make all the difference. If you’re part of a care team or family preparing for the season, consider:

Establishing a simple visual schedule for the holidays 📅
Packing a “sensory kit” for outings — comfort item, headphones, familiar toy 📦
Planning breaks and downtime so the day doesn’t get overwhelming 🌿

Even small adjustments can help create a calmer, more enjoyable holiday experience for children on the spectrum.
