APIC is a grant funded program created by the University at Buffalo Department of Psychiatry that provides an intermediate level of care created through a community-based, psychiatrist-directed Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) Diversion Team partnered with existing local agencies. APIC serves children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual dis

abilities, developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury, with or without accompanying mental illness. We provide several unique services including intermediate level care coordination, medication management, dually diagnosed wraparound services, and access to mobile psychiatric care. While APIC makes every effort to support the families of all referrals, it is primarily focused on meeting the needs of individuals who can not be served in traditional mental health settings and who would likely require hospitalization or residential placement in the absence of our services.

Autism acceptance goes beyond recognition, it’s reflected in how care is delivered every day.

It’s seen in individualized approaches, thoughtful communication, and environments that adapt to the needs of the child, not the other way around.

For families and care teams, acceptance isn’t a moment, it’s an ongoing commitment.

As Autism Awareness Month comes to a close, the conversation continues to evolve...from awareness to acceptance.

Acceptance means recognizing individual needs, adapting care approaches, and ensuring children are supported in ways that are appropriate, consistent, and sustainable.

At APIC, we work alongside partners and care teams to help translate awareness into action, supporting children and families well beyond the month of April.

The clinical environment plays a critical role in how children experience care.

Simple considerations, clear expectations, consistent routines, and thoughtful pacing, can help reduce stress and improve interactions for children on the autism spectrum.

Awareness in practice means creating spaces that are responsive to individual needs.

Communication looks different for every child. For some, it’s spoken language. For others, it may involve alternative or augmentative methods.

During Autism Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize and support the many ways children express themselves, and ensure care teams are equipped to respond appropriately.

Autism Awareness Month is a reminder that care doesn’t happen in theory, it happens in real, everyday moments.

In clinical settings, schools, and homes, small adjustments in communication, environment, and approach can significantly impact a child’s experience.

At APIC, we support partners and care teams in applying practical strategies that help make those moments more manageable and more effective.

Autism isn’t always visible; and neither is the level of coordination, planning, and support that often happens behind the scenes.

For many families and care teams, progress depends on consistent communication, thoughtful adjustments, and ongoing collaboration across settings.

During Autism Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize not just the diagnosis, but the systems of care that help support each child’s day-to-day experience.

As we approach Autism Awareness Month, it’s an opportunity to pause and reflect on the importance of understanding, support, and informed care.

For families and care teams, the journey is ongoing, shaped by everyday moments, evolving needs, and the support systems in place along the way.

At APIC, we remain focused on supporting those navigating this path every day.

The way care is delivered matters just as much as the care itself. Small adjustments in environment, communication, and pacing can significantly impact how a child experiences a clinical or support setting.

Thoughtful, consistent approaches help create spaces where children feel more comfortable, understood, and supported.
