Celebrating Beltane with Aromatherapy
Beltane is an ancient Gaelic fire festival celebrated on May 1st, that marks the peak of Spring and the beginning of Summer. It marks the midpoint between the Spring Equinox (Ostara) and the Summer Solstice (Litha). It is the transition into the light half of the year. The name Beltane (pronounced Bel-tain or Bel-ten-ah) comes from Old Irish Beltene, often translated as “bright fire.”
Historically, the Celtic people celebrated Beltane with bonfires, livestock blessings, protection rituals and seasonal celebrations intended to promote fertility, health, and prosperity for the coming year. It is a celebration of the Earth’s natural cycles and a time for communities to honor the changing of the seasons.
For today’s Pagans, Beltane is a key time to honor gods and goddesses who represented Beltane's themes of love and vibrant energy. It is full of passion, love, sexuality, sensuality, vitality and fertility. It is a time when the Earth is full of abundance, the days become longer and communities start to gather after a long winter. Many communities gather to dance the May Pole and to bless the land for the coming growth season. May baskets are woven and filled with handmade baked goods, candies, herbs and fresh flowers to share with others.
Adding Aromatherapy to your Beltane celebration is easy and brings an added element of fun to your festivities. Choose essential oils that are associate with fire, passion and love.
1. Create an anointing oil for candles, altered tools or yourself by blending essential oil with a carrier oil in a glass dropper bottle.
2. Add a few drops of essential oils to epsom salt and create a sensual ritual bath. Surround the tub with fresh spring flowers to celebrate fertility, self-love, and the blossoming of spring.
3. Create a diffuser blend with a few drops of jasmine, rose, and a touch of frankincense to an aromatherapy diffuser while performing Beltane rituals or setting intentions for growth.
4. Shake off lingering winter sluggishness and clear away the last gloomy remnants of Winter by creating a linen spray with a blend of uplifting spring oils.
5. Add fresh herbs to decor or altar spaces. Herbs associated with the Beltane include Butcher’s Broom, Chamomile Flowers, Dandelion Root and Flowers, Jasmine Flowers, Lavender, Mugwort, Nettle Leaf, Red Clover Blossoms and Wormwood.
Please feel free to reach out if I can assist you in any way. Blessed Beltane
