Is tai chi right for you? Perhaps! Do any of these apply to you?
“I want to be more flexible so when I wake up in the morning I’m not so stiff.”
“I wish I had more energy to [hike, swim, dance, play with my children or grandchildren, etc].”
“I’ve always wanted to try tai chi.”
“I want a low-impact exercise that improves the health of my joints, not one that makes them more sore.”
“I would like to meet new people with similar interests to mine.”
“I used to do another martial art, but I need something that puts less stress on my joints."

If the answer is yes to any or all of these statements, then tai chi at Human Harmonies could be just what you’re looking for. Come by our open house and talk with an instructor while you enjoy a cup of tea.

In Eastern traditions, snakes represent wisdom, creativity, and transformation. Snakes move with ease and flexibility. We match that fluid energy with the practice of tai chi. Students who practice tai chi at Human Harmonies report increased flexibility and strength, better coordination and relief from chronic pain, especially from arthritis and strained joints. According to Amanda K, “Not only does it offer me and others a wide variety of health benefits—including increased flexibility, strength and energy—it has created a wonderful community of participants, and I have met great people in these classes.”

Photo:Human Harmonies Master Teacher John Hanley in Snake Creeps Down

Welcome the year of the snake with a tai chi lesson open to all! Shown in the photo, “snake creeps down” is a tai chi movement that requires strength, balance, coordination and an understanding of how to remain stable and rooted in challenging positions. Do you need to get as low as Master Hanley to benefit from this, and other tai chi movements? Of course not! You will work within your own range of motion and set goals that are right for you.

If you’re looking to become more stable on your feet, see for yourself how tai chi can help you gain strength, balance, coordination and a better understanding of how to ground and root your body. Join us on February 1st for our tai chi lesson to welcome in the lunar new year.

Move like a snake in 2025 - the year of the wood snake!

Snakes are limber and agile. The low impact movements of tai chi can help restore the health and mobility of your joints and muscles.

Snakes represent transformation. Like a snake sheds its skin, you can shed the post-holiday sluggishness and move more fluidly and with more energy.

Snakes have flexible spines. If you have stiffness in your lower back, neck or shoulders, an internal martial art like tai chi can help improve posture, remove pressure from compressed discs, and build the core and back muscles required to support a healthy spine.

Snakes store their energy. If you’re feeling depleted, even one lesson can both energize and relax you at the same time. It’s a feeling you need to experience for yourself.

Snakes symbolize wisdom! Take action on those steps that can improve your quality of life. Try a lesson and see for yourself why tai chi has been practiced for centuries.

Join us for our lunar new year tai chi lesson to welcome the year of the snake:

Are Tai Chi, T’ai Chi, and Taiji the same? Yes, they are. How about Qigong, Ch’i Kung, and Chi Gong? Yes as well!

Read why below and join us this weekend to celebrate World Tai Chi and Qigong Day!

The variation in spelling is due to the different methods used over the years to translate the Chinese written language, which consists of pictures and ideograms, into Roman letters. As a result, each
country (and sometimes individual authors) adopted their own method of romanization. In the 1800s translations from Chinese were known as Wade-Giles variations, named after it's two founders.

In 1958, China created a standard phonetic system for the romanization called Hanyu Pinyin (Pinyin for short).
T’ai Chi, the original Wade-Giles translation, is mostly known in the West simply as “Tai Chi”. The Pinyin translation is Taiji.

As for Qigong (the Pinyin spelling), its Wade-Giles translation is Ch’i Kung, but other variations like Chi Gong are popular in the West.

No matter how they're spelled, the movements have been improving lives for centuries!

How would you like to join people around the world as they practice tai chi, maybe even for the first time? On Saturday, April 27th, you can! It's World Tai Chi & Qigong Day, a yearly celebration of movements that have been improving health for centuries.

Chelmsford's event will be at 10:00 am in Bartlett Park, right behind the library. All you need are some comfortable clothes and a willingness to try something fun and new. Not new to tai chi? Join us for a chance to practice with a great community of like-minded people.

Why tai chi? Besides being fun and both relaxing and energizing at the same time, tai chi has been studied for its health benefits. Tai Chi has been shown to be effective in improving immune, lymphatic, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems. Study participants have shown increased energy and vitality; better coordination, flexibility and stability; improved balance and mobility; more tranquility, peace of mind; strengthened muscles, tendons and ligaments; and a better response to stress. Sounds pretty comprehensive, right? See for yourself!

Save the date and join me there! Send any questions to jill@humanharmonies.com.
