March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and the Chelmsford Health Department is committed to raising awareness about how gambling can affect individuals, families, and our wider community. Problem gambling is a growing concern in Massachusetts, especially since the expansion of legalized sports betting.
Recent research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst shows that problem gambling is rising among regular (monthly) gamblers across the state. For example:
The percentage of monthly gamblers experiencing gambling problems increased from 20.9% in 2022 to 28% in 2024.
More residents are expressing concern about the impact of gambling overall, with the share of monthly gamblers who feel gambling causes more harm than good rising from 48% in 2022 to 56% in 2024.
