Author below makes some very interesting points!
Have a blessed evening everyone!
Ten things I want people understand about my kids who have hearing loss:
•Hearing loss is a small part of them. They are just typical kids who don't have typical hearing.
•Speak up. If you speak in a quiet voice, they probably will not hear you.
•Acoustics matter. When they are in a place with background noise or cross-talking, it is very challenging to hear.
•Repeat it. If they don't hear you the first time, don't get frustrated. Repeat. If that doesn't work, try rephrasing it. No need to shout.
•Be kind. Saying "Never mind” makes them feel left out and it is isolating.
•They are unique. Hearing loss is a spectrum that varies: No two people experience it the same way.
•Keep your mouth visible. Some people use lip-reading to help fill in the blanks.
•Awareness is key. Tap them gently or say their name to get their attention before you speak to them. Face them. If your back is turned, they will miss most or all of what you say.
•Be patient. Frustration cuts. People who are deaf or hard of hearing are proficient at reading body language. It's nuanced. Understanding social nuances can be challenging. Many people experience some level of social anxiety.
•Fatigue is real. Listening with hearing loss can be exhausting, and people need time to decompress. It is harder than it looks.
Despite these challenges, they are resilient, adaptable people who want to be accepted and included.
