The stats:

- 63 million Americans are caregivers (1 in 4 adults)
- Women are the majority at 61%
- Care recipients are mostly older adults
- Most caregivers live with the care recipient
- 4 million Americans under 18 are caregivers (up from 1.4 million)

But I am encouraged to see more and more employers embracing caregiver benefits and programs.

Most companies talk about mental health and retention…

But they forget about one of the biggest causes of burnout:

Healthcare facilities have regulations they must follow in the patient & caregiver education and engagement space. They must follow rules and show evidence of it to regulatory agencies like the Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and so many more.

But, the hundreds and hundreds of caregivers that I worked with NEVER knew that and if they did know, they never expressed it to me as the social worker.

They always said to me after I spoke to them, "if we had known this or that, we would've done things differently."

When navigating the healthcare system, you should get all of the help you need as a patient or caregiver. If you don't, ASK FOR IT! Ask the social worker, nurse or doctor for help.

Understand something, there is a clinical side to healthcare (where you're healed from or managing your condition) and a non-clinical side. Both are equally important. The non-clinical side is finding services and help, completing paperwork, getting Medicaid, communicating with providers, finding insurance & providers and making sure your services are paid for (which seems to be our responsibility as patients). You have to know the ins and outs of both.
