Margerum Cemetery

Margerum Cemetery All of the land in the Margerum Community north of the highway, including the cemetery plot, once belonged to the Oates Estate.

It was deeded to the Oates family by the US Government about 140 years ago. Later, the exact date is not known, a portion of the Oates Estate was acquired by the Roberts family. This included the cemetery plot. James L Roberts, the grandfather of M D Wallace, set aside a plot for a burial place about 1835. It was not deeded to any organization or church, since there was no church located in this area at that time. Later a non-denominational church was built near the SE corner of the cemetery plot. This little building was also used as Margerum's first public school. (This is from a history compiled and written by Luther Harris and Clyde E Vinson, 8-8-1954)
