Happy Nurses Week to All the Real-Life Superheroes in Scrubs! 🩺

But especially to our very own, Misty Maxwell 💙

Misty, you’re not just a nurse practitioner, you’re a leader, a mentor, a patient advocate, a fighter, and a healer wrapped into one amazing human. You give your heart to every patient who walks through our doors, and somehow, even on the hardest days, you still show up with compassion, strength, and grace. We see you. We appreciate you. And we are so proud to work alongside you.

To every nurse out there-thank you for choosing one of the hardest, most selfless, and most important jobs there is. The world is better because of you. 💖

Happy Nurses Week!

You deserve to be celebrated every single day. 🌟

As of April 2025, Alabama is experiencing a surge in norovirus cases, a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus that often presents with fever.

We ask that if you have any of the combined symptoms, please call the clinic before trying to come in because the virus spreads so easily. All we can do is treat the symptoms. The virus will have to run its course.

🦠 Norovirus Activity in Alabama

Norovirus is currently the predominant gastrointestinal virus affecting Alabama. The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has reported multiple outbreaks, including a notable incident linked to Louisiana oysters distributed in Southwest Alabama. This outbreak resulted in at least 11 illnesses and prompted a recall of the implicated oysters .

Nationally, norovirus activity has been higher than usual this season. Between August 2024 and April 2025, over 2,400 outbreaks were reported by states participating in the CDC’s NoroSTAT program, marking a significant increase compared to previous years .

🤒 Common Symptoms

Norovirus symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and can include:
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Stomach cramps
• Fever
• Headache
• Body aches

Most individuals recover within 1 to 3 days, but dehydration is a significant concern, especially for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Misty is immunocompromised so we ask that everyone continue to be mindful of others.

🧼 Prevention Tips

To reduce the risk of norovirus infection:
• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the restroom and before eating or preparing food.
• Disinfect contaminated surfaces using bleach-based cleaners.
• Avoid preparing food for others while experiencing symptoms and for at least 48 hours after recovery.
• Ensure shellfish, particularly oysters, are cooked thoroughly before consumption.

Hand sanitizers are less effective against norovirus, so proper handwashing is crucial.

If you or someone you know is experiencing severe symptoms or signs of dehydration, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly.

Important Update: GLP-1 Medications

Dear Patients,

We would like to provide some clarity regarding GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic, Trulicity, and Mounjaro). These medications are primarily approved for the management of Type 2 Diabetes. As such, insurance companies require a documented Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis in order for these prescriptions to be covered or approved.

If you do not have a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, we are unable to prescribe these medications, as they are not covered for alternative uses at this time.

We understand the interest in these medications and are here to answer your questions and provide guidance on the best treatment options for your individual needs. Your health and well-being are always our top priority!

If you have questions about your diagnosis or need to confirm eligibility, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.

Thank you for your understanding,
Cherokee Family Clinic
