On April 14, 1977, 49 years ago today, the largest fire in Cherry Hill history and one of the largest structural fires ever in New Jersey occurred. The fire destroyed the former Garden State Park Racetrack at the intersection of Route 70 and Haddonfield Road. While more than 11,000 people were successfully evacuated from the largely wooden grandstand structure, sadly, the fire resulted in three deaths and at least 20 injuries.

Even with the setback of the fire, the explosive building and population growth in the Township continued. Career firefighters were first hired in Cherry Hill in the 1960s to keep up with the growing volume of emergency calls. Still, by the late 1970s, a group of these career firefighters realized that to improve their working conditions and compensation, they needed to organize into a labor union. The year after the fire, on October 16, 1978, Cherry Hill Firefighters International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2663 was founded.

Your Cherry Hill Professional Firefighters are saddened to learn of the passing of active duty Camden Firefighter Ayishia Williams. We offer our deepest condolences to FF Williams's coworkers, friends, and family.

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of our sister, Firefighter Ayishia Williams — a hero, a servant, and a true embodiment of what it means to serve the City of Camden.
Ayishia dedicated her life to helping others. From her service as a Corrections Officer to answering the call as a Camden City Firefighter, she carried herself with strength, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to her community.
Even in the face of illness, Ayishia continued to serve. She never stopped showing up. She remained active in her community, a proud member of BUFF, continuing to volunteer, give back, and uplift others while quietly fighting her own battle. That kind of strength, love, and selflessness speaks volumes about the woman she was.
She was more than a firefighter — she was our sister. She was family.
Her legacy is one of true service, sacrifice, and resilience. As we grieve this tremendous loss, we also recognize the impact she made on this Department and the City she so proudly served.
We owe it to Ayishia to carry that legacy forward — to support one another, to stand together, and to continue serving our community with the same dedication she showed every single day.
Please keep her family, loved ones, and all members of the Camden City Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Rest in Peace, Firefighter Ayishia Williams. We will take it from here. 🕊️❤️‍🔥🙏🏽
Fraternally,
Pete Perez

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, your C-Platoon Cherry Hill Fire Department Professional Firefighters from Ladder 1324 and Squad 13 responded via automatic aid into Haddonfield for reports of two nearly simultaneous fires, including this well-involved garage fire.

Yesterday evening crews were dispatched for a fire in an apartment on Kings Highway. While responding, Camden County advised units of an additional assignment - a garage fire on Marquis Rd. Engine 14 responded to the fire on Kings Highway while Ladder and Squad 14 responded across town. Thanks to help from our mutual aid companies, both fires were extinguished and no injuries were reported.

Your Cherry Hill Professional Firefighters were honored to be on hand at Cherry Hill Fire Department Headquarters on March 26, 2026 introducing the New Jersey First Responders Post‑Traumatic Stress Disorder Protection Act. Signed into law on January 14, 2026 by former Governor Phil Murphy, the Act establishes strong employment protections for paid first responders — including firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and law enforcement officers — diagnosed with work‑related PTSD. It prohibits public employers from discharging, harassing, or retaliating against any first responder who takes leave for a qualifying PTSD diagnosis.

National and state data underscore the need for this law. Research shows roughly 30% of first responders develop behavioral health conditions, including PTSD, compared with about 20% of the general population. Since 2018, more than 1,400 first responders have died by su***de, and in recent years su***des have often exceeded line‑of‑duty deaths.

The Act aims to overcome the culture of stoicism that has discouraged first responders from seeking mental health care.

State Senator Jim Beach (D-LD6) and Assemblyman Bill Moen (D‑LD5), primary sponsors of the original bills (S2373 and A2145), joined the announcement, along with Camden County Commissioners Commissioner Director Lou Cappelli and Colleen Bianco Bezich for Camden County Commissioner, New Jersey Firefighters PFANJ President Matt Caliente, PFANJ 1st VP Dave Hines, PFANJ Treasurer Greg Swanson, PFANJ Peer Support Coordinator John Herrmann, and representatives from multiple International Association of Fire Fighters locals.

This law follows years of advocacy, testimony, and legislative effort by PFANJ, with support from the New Jersey State Fraternal Order of Police. Combined with August 2025 legislation advocated by the NJ State PBA guaranteeing first responders their choice of physician and up to 25 therapeutic hours of PTSD treatment after a critical incident, the Act protects responders’ seniority, benefits, and income and provides a cost‑effective judicial process for employees.

Key protections under the new law:

- Diagnosis standard: Protection applies when PTSD is documented by a judge of the Division of Workers’ Compensation or a qualified mental health professional.
- Anti‑retaliation: Employers may not terminate or discriminate against employees for requesting or taking leave for PTSD.
- Right to reinstatement: When cleared by a professional, a responder must be returned to their prior position with full seniority and benefits for up to two years from the critical incident, if able.
- Enforcement: Repeat violators face civil fines up to $10,000; employees may seek relief for lost wages and legal fees.

We thank everyone who advocated for these lifesaving protections and we were honored to be on hand for today's announcement.

Please consider supporting the great mission of the The Cherry Hill Food Pantry!

Dear Friends of the Pantry:

Thank you for supporting our previous Raffle Fundraisers. Last year we raised $50,000 due to the incredible generosity of the many people like you who participated. This year, our goal is $55,000.

We have 15 REALLY GREAT PRIZES this year. We are hoping that you will support us again and share this email with your family, friends and neighbors so they can join in as well. There is a list of the 15 prizes at the end of this email. I also attached our raffle flyer. Please feel free to forward this email and the flyer to anyone you think might want to help us have a successful raffle.

Tickets are $10.00 each. You can register and pay for the raffle online at https://cherryhillfoodpantry.org/2026-raffle-fundraiser/ and have your tickets automatically entered into the drawing. For those who want to go old school and pay by cash or check, we also have old fashioned hard copy raffle tickets. Tickets for those paying by cash or check will be available at the pantry or by calling me at 856 546-9133. The prize drawing will be on Sunday April 12 at 6:00 PM.

We will need to sell a lot of raffle tickets if we hope to meet our goal of $55,000. So, please consider buying multiple tickets. This will be our only fundraiser in 2026.

Most importantly, every ticket purchased helps provide food and essential groceries to over 900 families in our community who rely on us. Your support ensures our shelves stay stocked and our neighbors feel supported during challenging times.

We also expect to be serving many more clients as more and more people find their expenses far exceeding their income.
