Happy Summer ~ Summer is officially here. The 2025 June solstice, which marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of winter in the Southern Hemisphere, occurs today at 10:42 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

160 years ago on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and 2,000+ Federal soldiers of the 13th Army Corps arrive in Galveston, TX to spread the word about the Emancipation Proclamation that President Lincoln signed 2 and ½ years earlier on September 22, 1862.

Some historians believe the reason for the lag time was that Lincoln's proclamation simply wasn't enforceable before the end of the Civil War. General Granger read General Orders No. 3 first at Union Army Headquarters which provides in part:
“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection therefore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”

Juneteenth has been celebrated in Texas since the first anniversary of this day in 1866, Texas made it a state holiday in 1980, and Juneteenth has been a federal holiday since 2021.
