It's time to talk about ENM. Ethical Non-monogamy, which some mistake and conflate with consensual non- monogamy and even less accurately with: a breach of trust or faithfulness that while being salvaged, is served up as ENM even though it was more like cheating, lying about it and being found out, and then having a hard time owning the rupture. Once this happens and the straying partner is found out, it is usually not the best time nor is the relation in the best shape to add the strain of opening up to serious instability and distrust. Often I sense that one partner who has the affair is offering opening the marriage as the only choice for the other to consider, which adds psychological hurt to what is already, best served by remorse. When I get calls from partners seeking to consult on the ethics and the guidance as well as contractual rebuilding that ENM or even consent based non monogamy requires, I first make sure that their is no coercion involved " I had an affair with a third party and kept you in the dark but now I want to paint my extracurricular activities with the brush of ENM and that makes everything better after the fact. That is not what Ethical Non Monogamy is at all. In enm, the existing trust and communications has to be better than ever with both partners agreeing together that they are ready for polyamory.The success of an open relationship is not very well served by miscommunication and a history of broken bonds.

We had to say goodbye to Shadow, our beloved family pet. It's painful and hard. To all of you who have loved and lost my family and I wish healing and comfort. To Shadow my favorite regular occupant on the therapy couch.
