Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) is often talked about in terms of visible hair loss — but there’s a lesser-known risk parents and caregivers should understand.
In this blog, ADAA Member Expert Marla W. Deibler, PsyD, MSCP, ABPP explains how, in some cases, hair pulling can be accompanied by hair swallowing (trichophagia), which may lead to a rare but serious medical condition called a trichobezoar.
The blog covers:
• Warning signs like stomach pain, nausea, or unexplained weight loss
• Why some individuals engage in hair swallowing
• When to seek medical attention
• How evidence-based treatment can help address both the behavior and underlying triggers
Awareness — not alarm — is key. With the right support, children and families can address these behaviors with compassion and effective care.
