Seeking two people who are postpartum and experienced depression recently to be in a documentary. If you think this is you or you know someone…please read on.

While the last two decades have brought increased awareness about the need to screen and adequately treat postpartum depression (PPD), a major documentary film that illuminates the lived experiences of those suffering or who have recovered from PPD has yet to emerge. In partnership with multi-award winning documentary production company Ark Media, we are proud to announce this important project: the creation of a feature-length documentary for national broadcast that will tell a more complete story of PPD through the voices and faces of a diverse group of women across America. With this film, we will catalyze a new era of understanding of PPD and its treatment, inspiring transformation at the level of the individual, couple, family, community and health care system in order to get women the care they deserve.

The heart and soul of More Than Blue will be the stories of real women living through postpartum depression, as well as those who have recovered or who are recovering. We are now identifying a group of courageous women who wish to participate. We will film these women across a period of months in an effort to capture many aspects of their “postpartum story”, from onset of symptoms to the sometimes bewildering search for effective support and treatment, to the joy and relief of recovery. As women tell their individual narratives, we will capture the experiences of others involved in the postpartum experience: partners, friends, clinicians and other providers of care and support.

We are looking to include two additional women who are early on in the postpartum period (under one year) and recovering from postpartum depression. It was always our hope to capture birthing persons from across America, and we are particularly interested in connecting with postpartum women from the South, Southwest and Western states with a focus on women of color. If you or someone you know is recently postpartum and interested in learning more, please contact us through our interest form.

We are finally getting some real movement in this initiative. Thank you CBC for running this story. Today the National Perinatal Mental Health Strategy Act was introduced into congress.

We (Canadian Perinatal Mental Health Collaborative) have been working on this for almost two years. It’s amazing what a small group of passionate people can get accomplished.

If you believe in parents mental health being supported in pregnancy and postpartum, please let your MP know. It takes less than one minute. Any Canadian can write a letter.

As the pandemic drives an increase in the number of mental health crises among pregnant women and new mothers, the NDP is pushing for a national mental health strategy to help women through pregnancy and into motherhood.

Any expecting or new parents out there available next Saturday (3/13) morning to take part in this wonderful study? You’ll create a personalized lullaby for your baby. No musical ability needed. There will be a musician paired with you to actually compose it. Go to bit.ly/colullaby to see if you’re eligible. (Must reside in the US)

You’ll also be compensated $90 for your time (and for finishing a couple of surveys)

We (me and folks at CUBoulder) are recruiting pregnant folks for a new research study and thought you may have some people you could share with. We are especially hoping to have diverse voices included in this research (since it so often isn't in perinatal health). Here is an article about it. https://www.colorado.edu/today/2021/02/09/research-backed-custom-lullabies-connect-colorado-parents-babies

Are you pregnant and feeling isolated or disconnected? Without leaving your home, connect with a community of parents and create a personalized lullaby for you and your child! The Lullaby Project Research Study aims to increase your sense of connection with your child and community. Lullabies are created through videoconference in collaboration with musicians.

Participants will:
• Attend one 3.5 hour lullaby creation session (breaks included)
• Complete 3 online surveys
• Receive compensation up to $90

Participants will select one of these time slots, space is limited, all times are in Mountain Standard Time:
• Saturday, March 13th from 9:00am-12:30pm
• Sunday, March 14th from 2:00pm-5:30pm
• Saturday, April 10th from 9:00am-12:30pm

Ginger is already to co-teach the final weekend of prenatal yoga teacher training. This group of students have endured so many changes and uncertainty in this training. I see some parallels with pregnancy, birth and life in general. Moving with the contractions of life. We are meeting in person finally, masked and distanced and it feels so good! I know they will share these practices wide and far.

Her name is Sha-Asia Washington and she was 26 years old. Her friends and family say that she was excited about becoming a new mom and describe her as a beautiful soul.
A few days past her due date, she went for a routine stress test Woodhull hospital in Brooklyn, NY, where doctors gave her medication to induce labor. Doctors asked Sha-Asia if she wanted an epidural, to which she consented after some hesitation. She went into cardiac arrest while her baby was delivered during an emergency c-section.
Sha-Asia’s death is a reminder for how the U.S. continues to fail Black birthing people. Sha-Asia is the third Black woman to have passed away from birthing complications in a New York City hospital so far this year.
The mistreatment and neglect Black birthing people receive at the hands of the medical providers is obstetric violence and it CANNOT go unchecked! Black women are 75% more likely to experience a traumatic birth as a result of obstetric violence. Obstetric violence encompasses disrespectful attitudes from care providers, discrimination, physical and/or sexual abuse, and lack of consent for treatment. Black birthing people have the right to restorative justice and mediation to address obstetric violence, neglect, and other injustices.

Black birthing people deserve better! Sha-Asia Washington deserved better! At NAABB we are committed to uplifting the voices of Black birthing people. We will continue to combat the effects of structural racism within maternal and infant health to advance Black birth outcomes.

Being a Doula is something I never planned to do but it seems the universe really wanted me to work with pregnant women. After 13 years of supporting families during birth, I still deeply love this work. I am proud to be a volunteer doula at Denver Health, our federally funded hospital. They turn no one away. They care for all people with love and respect. Last night I supported a first time mom and watched the nurses and midwives seemlessly move between Spanish and English to ensure the birthing person understood and felt comfortable. They honored her choices. They explained everything they were doing and gave her the space to find her own voice and to help her in feeling empowered in her birth. They don’t ask questions about documentation or insurance. This is THE WORK! Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, especially during birth.
