FDA came out with a recommendation regarding anti choking devices

These choking rescue protocols include abdominal thrusts (also called the “Heimlich” maneuver) for children and adults but not anti-choking devices.

On Saturday, Firefighter Mychal Pivetz of Engine 239 was off-duty and enjoying a bagel near his home in Carroll Gardens when he heard a woman screaming for help. He ran over to see what was going on.

“I saw a mother with her four-year old daughter who was cyanotic. She was blue in the face and lips. I could see food in her mouth and her jaw was clenched. She was actively seizing,” said Firefighter Pivetz. “I started doing backslaps to the baby. She was limp so I started doing chest compressions. After about four chest compressions, the baby started becoming reactive and crying so I put her on the side.”

FDNY EMS arrived to take over and transport.

Firefighter Pivetz has been at Engine 239 for 11 years. Prior to that he was an FDNY EMT and Paramedic. He is also a member of the Army National Guard.

We are proud to present Amelia Loverme with our Citizen Achievement Award for her life-saving efforts. While at Leicester Public Schools, she jumped into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver when her brother started choking. We send our well wishes to her brother, Charlie. When 54-year-old Howard Snitzer crumpled to the ground, suffering a massive heart attack, more than 20 first responders in his tiny Minnesota town performed CPR for 96 minutes to save his life.
