We are proud to share that CHKD's ECMO Team is honored with the Gold Level ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support! This award makes CHKD, the only hospital in Hampton Roads able to offer ECMO to pediatric patients, a Designated Gold Level Center of Excellence.

The award-winning care from our dedicated ECMO team has saved the lives of patients like Bennett, who underwent ECMO Therapy at CHKD. In 2021, Bennett was battling pneumonia when doctors at CHKD were able to save him using ECMO therapy – which takes over the work of the heart and, or, lungs. Bennett's mom, Sarah, is deeply grateful for the lifesaving care her son received. "I feel like everyone is on the same team, working to do what's best for Bennett."

After being diagnosed with sagittal craniosynostosis at birth, Ridley Golom was only 11 days old when she had her first appointment at CHKD’s Cleft and Craniofacial Center. Under the expert care of Dr. Jesus Gil Inciong and his team, Ridley underwent sagittal strip craniectomy and cranial springs surgery at 3 months of age through limited incisions. That offered her a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.

A few months later, Ridley had surgery to remove the springs and was discharged the very next day, giving her more time at home with her family. Now 15 months old, Ridley is walking, playing with her older sister, and keeping up with her family’s dogs, Taz and Winnie!

“We had a great support system,” says Ridley’s mom, Rebecca. “All the doctors and nurses at CHKD were very informative and understanding. They were there when you needed a shoulder to cry on, or if you needed something explained.”

Ridley will continue to receive follow-up care, but thanks to her strength and the dedication of her care team at CHKD, she’s already come so far. 💛

📣 On Saturday, David Wright, former captain of the New York Mets, will have his number 5 jersey retired and be inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame at Citi Field. 💙⚾️🧡 David, a Chesapeake native, has been supporting and visiting the kids at CHKD for nearly 20 years, and his previous Vegas Night fundraisers raised nearly $1.7 million to support our patients. In gratitude for his generosity, in 2020, CHKD named our 8th floor playroom the "David and Molly Wright Playroom." Thank you, David, for keeping CHKD close to your heart. You’ve always been in our "Hall of Fame." 🏆

CHKD issues the following clarification regarding our new weapons screening process.

CHKD is not confiscating weapons. Our goal is to keep our patients, families and staff safe by preventing weapons from being brought into our Children's Hospital. During the weapons screening process for all visitors, visitors will be given the opportunity to return identified weapons to their vehicles. Visitors unable or unwilling to return weapons to their vehicle will be able to dispose of them safely through a process managed by our security team, or, in the case of fi****ms, to work with our security team following a defined protocol that complies with all applicable laws and regulations. We apologize for any confusion created by our initial description of our weapons screening process.

Help stir up a cure! 🍋 The King's Daughters for CHKD annual Anthem LemonAid fundraiser starts tomorrow. Through Aug. 3, you can host a lemonade stand or raise funds to support children in CHKD's Cancer and Blood Disorder's Center, like Jackie, who is now in remission. Born at just 23 weeks, Beau Wilson was rushed to CHKD’s NICU with critical complications, including bilateral brain bleeds. There, Beau was placed on a ventilator and cared for by CHKD’s expert neonatology team.

Beau underwent multiple surgeries while still in the NICU, including heart surgery at two weeks old, and laser eye procedures to preserve his vision. After a follow-up visit at CHKD, Beau was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. His care team, including his primary care nurse at the time, Pam, provided his family with the knowledge, comfort, and guidance they needed every step of the way. “I am forever grateful that such a wonderful children’s hospital exists,” says Beau’s mom, Katie. “Without CHKD, my son would not be here.”

Now 18 years old, Beau is thriving. He’s a Special Olympics athlete, a high school senior, a student representative of the Special Olympics Youth Council, and a friendly face at a local sandwich shop. He’s working toward his dream of starting a lawn care business, and never misses a chance to greet you with a big smile and a hug!
