From plaster model to test socket šŸ‘£

It’s always neat to see the process come together. The plaster model helps us create a custom fit for each patient, and this hip articulation test socket is an important step in making sure everything functions comfortably and correctly before the final device is completed.

A lot of time, detail, and craftsmanship go into every device we make — all with the goal of helping our patients move with confidence again.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Coastal!

Today we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, mother figures, and caregivers who give so much of themselves every day. Your strength, patience, and love don’t go unnoticed—and we are grateful for the many ways you support your families, your communities, and often the healing journeys of those around you.

To the moms on our Coastal team, the moms we serve, and the families who walk through our doors—you inspire us more than you know. Caring for others is at the heart of what we do, and today we especially recognize the care that starts at home.

Wishing you a day filled with rest, appreciation, and the people who make you feel most loved. šŸ’™

There’s something powerful about seeing your care come to life right in front of you.

Today, our patient got a firsthand look at her socket being created in real time—layer by layer. Moments like this turn what can feel like a long process into something tangible, personal, and even a little exciting.

We love being able to involve our patients in their journey and show them the innovation happening behind the scenes to support their mobility and independence.

From mold to finished brace šŸ‘‡

These 4 photos show the full process of building a custom CROW boot from start to finish:

1ļøāƒ£ Modified plaster model—ready for plastic pulling

2ļøāƒ£ Posterior section pulled with a built-in corrugation for added strength and resistance to bending at the ankle

3ļøāƒ£ Our team (Bobby & Mike) pulling the anterior section—also incorporating corrugation to reinforce the structure

4ļøāƒ£ Final product—fully assembled and ready to protect and support the patient

Every detail in a CROW boot matters. It’s not just about fit—it’s about creating a rigid, protective environment that helps patients stay mobile while healing.

Proud of the team at Coastal Prosthetics and Orthotics for the craftsmanship that goes into every build.

Happy Monday✨
While most people are still sipping their coffee, our 3D printer is already getting to work—turning ideas into something real, one layer at a time.

This is where precision meets innovation… and where better outcomes for our patients begin.

Stay tuned—this one’s going to be a good one šŸ‘€

Two approaches. One goal: the best possible outcome for our patients.

On the right is a traditional SMO, and on the left is a 3D printed SMO. Both are designed to provide support, alignment, and stability—but the way we get there can look a little different.

3D printing allows for increased customization, faster adjustments, and unique designs (and sometimes even a little extra personality šŸŽØ). Traditional fabrication continues to be a reliable, time-tested option.

The best part? We’re able to choose the right approach based on each patient’s individual needs.

Every custom prosthetic has a story—and this is one we’re excited to share.

This mold is the very first step in creating a prosthesis for a hip disarticulation patient. From here, every detail will be refined, adjusted, and built with intention to achieve the best possible fit and function.

Stay tuned and we’ll take you behind the scenes of this journey—from mold to final device—so you can see just how much care, skill, and innovation goes into each step.

Final Step: From concept to reality.

If you followed this build from the beginning, this is the finished result šŸ‘‡

What started as a raw model is now a fully finished above-knee prosthesis—built for one patient, one limb, and one life.

This custom socket features a bold blue static design with a skull pattern, bringing the patient’s vision to life in a way that’s both personal and powerful.

You’ll also notice the BOA dial system and posterior cutout. This allows the patient to easily tighten or loosen the socket throughout the day—helping maintain comfort, fit, and stability as their limb changes.

Now fully assembled with the knee and foot, this prosthesis is ready for the next step: getting our patient back to moving with confidence.

Proud of the team at Coastal Prosthetics and Orthotics for bringing this build all the way from start to finish.

Step 4: Final lamination + custom design

This is where everything really starts to come together.

šŸ”¹ The first two photos show the model with trimlines drawn and the cord layout for the BOA system—this will allow the patient to easily adjust the fit of their socket throughout the day

šŸ”¹ You’ll also see the 3-prong adapter now attached and everything prepped for the final thin lamination

šŸ”¹ The third photo shows the custom blue skull pattern before lamination

šŸ”¹ And the fourth shows the finished result—the pattern now fully brought to life in the socket

At Coastal Prosthetics and Orthotics, we focus on both performance and personalization—because this isn’t just a device, it’s something our patient will use every day.

Next up: cutout, trim, and BOA dial install.

Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing the finished prosthesis very soon.

This stage is all about building strength, structure, and precision before the final finish work.

šŸ”¹ In one of the photos, you’ll notice where our technician filled the gap between the socket and the 3-prong adapter using stable foam. This creates a solid, consistent foundation before lamination.

šŸ”¹ Another shows the socket fully laid up with carbon fiber and trikot—ready for lamination. Every layer is intentional and plays a role in the final strength and performance.

šŸ”¹ And finally, you’ll see the socket after lamination, with the blue pigment carried through again.

At Coastal Prosthetics and Orthotics, every step builds on the last to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient.

Stay tuned for the final lamination—where we’ll add a thin outer layer featuring the custom pattern our patient selected.

Innovation in action šŸ‘€

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our 3D printer creating a test socket—an important step in delivering a comfortable, precise fit for our patients. This technology allows us to move faster, make real-time adjustments, and ultimately provide a better experience from start to finish.

It’s pretty amazing to watch something so customized come to life layer by layer!
