Synopsis:
Roxbury Redemption: Building a Legacy is a poignant musical tale about resilience, transformation, and the enduring power of love and belief. The story follows a young boy, labeled as “mentally retarded” and told he could never succeed, as he defies all odds. After his mother’s tragic death in a hit-and-run accident, he spirals into a life of crime, ultimately leading to his imprisonment. In the penitentiary, he meets a mentor who helps him change his perspective. Upon his release, he embarks on a journey of redemption, putting himself through school to honor his mother’s belief in him, and ultimately becomes a doctor. The story is set in 1930s Boston, infused with music, dance, and a deeply moving narrative of triumph over adversity.
Production Needs:
1. Music Director: Guides the vocal and instrumental elements of the musical score, ensuring a seamless blend of 1930s-style jazz, blues, and gospel influences.
2. Choreographer: Designs movement and dance routines authentic to the 1930s, including swing, jazz, and traditional dance forms of the era.
3. Set Designer: Creates historically accurate and visually compelling settings, reflecting Boston in the 1930s (tenement houses, the penitentiary, and medical school settings). Applicants must submit a resume showcasing their experience in set design, with emphasis on historical or period pieces.
4. Costume Designer: Designs era-appropriate costumes to reflect the socioeconomic and cultural atmosphere of 1930s Boston and journey through the 70s to present time. Applicants must submit a resume demonstrating expertise in costume design, including prior work on historical productions.
5. Sound Technician: Oversees sound design and technical operations, ensuring clarity in music, vocals, and effects. Applicants must provide a resume highlighting expertise in sound design for musical theater.
6. Lighting Designer: Develops lighting schemes that enhance the emotional tone of the story, particularly during pivotal scenes such as the prison transformation and other dramatic scenes.
7. Stage Manager: Coordinates schedules, manages rehearsals, and ensures the production runs smoothly during performances.
8. Singers: Ensemble and soloist roles available. Must have strong vocal abilities in styles such as jazz, blues, and gospel. Applicants must submit an audition reel or MP3 of their strongest musical number.
Casting Call:
• Lead Role (Young Boy/Doctor): Must display strong emotional range and carry the narrative with authenticity. Singing and acting required.
• Supporting Role (Mother): Loving and determined, with a powerful singing voice.
• Supporting Role (Mentor in Prison): Charismatic and wise, with a commanding stage presence and a soulful voice.
• Ensemble Cast: Portrays various townspeople, inmates, military personnel, and students. Strong singing and dancing skills are essential.
Compensation:
• Payment will be based on experience and the scope of work for the role.
