Our next Empowered Eating Program Starts 11/3!

At Nuleeu, we work with hundreds of people on nutrition—and one challenge comes up more than any other: emotional eating.

Okay, hear me out…

What if “overweight” was a personal term — not a label pulled from a chart, but a reflection of your own health status?

Because when you think about it, the word over implies a universal standard — a line everyone should stay under.
But health isn’t a single line. It’s context, genetics, history, stress, hormones, sleep, access, and so much more.

And the same goes for “underweight.”

If “overweight” were truly personal, then “underweight” would have to be too. Maybe the real novel idea is that we just… stop labeling altogether.

Because both terms assume there’s one right range for every body — and there isn’t.
What if we stopped measuring people against averages and started measuring against themselves — their biology, their baseline, their lived experience?

Maybe then, we’d finally separate health from hierarchy.

I like to explain food like Legos.
When you eat, your body doesn’t say, “Oh no, those are cookie carbs.”
It just breaks everything down into pieces — glucose, amino acids, fatty acids — and uses them to build, repair, and fuel.
The only difference between a cookie and oatmeal is how the pieces fit together and how long they last.
Your body isn’t judging your food — only your mind is.

I’m so tired of the “but is it healthy?” talk.
A single food doesn’t define your health — your patterns don’t even define all of it.
Lifestyle only accounts for about 30% of health outcomes.
The rest? Genetics, environment, access, stress, relationships, sleep, and circumstance.
So no, an apple isn’t going to save your life…
Apples are “healthy” — until all you eat are apples. Then they’re not.
Because context is everything.
Health isn’t about single choices; it’s about the whole picture.

If your car became 50% more fuel efficient, you’d celebrate.
If your business operated 50% more efficiently, you’d call it success.

But when your body becomes 50% more efficient — conserving energy, adapting to lower intake, protecting you from famine — we call it “broken.”

Your metabolism isn’t failing you.
It’s protecting you.
It’s doing its job beautifully.

Maybe it’s not the body that needs fixing — maybe it’s the mindset that sees protection as a problem.

Most people believe they have nearly full control over their health — but science says otherwise. 🧠💡
We influence about 30%, not control it. The rest? Genetics, environment, hormones, access, stress, and chance.
Health isn’t a moral scorecard — it’s a system of regulation responding to what we live through, not what we “deserve.”

Maybe it’s time we all start asking: what does weight have to do with this?

Why is weight listed on a visit summary for a broken finger?
Why is BMI called out when someone comes in with a sore throat?
Why is the word “obese” showing up in records when it was never discussed?

The truth is, much of medicine still defaults to weight as the headline, even when it has nothing to do with the reason for care. This isn’t whole-person health. It’s bias built into systems and training.

Your health is not defined by a number on a chart.
Your care should not be reduced to a label.
And you have the right to ask, every single time:
👉 What does weight have to do with this?

✅ Times When Weight Is Clinically Relevant
• Medication dosing
• Many drugs are prescribed by weight (e.g., chemotherapy, anesthesia, certain antibiotics, blood thinners).
• Surgical & anesthesia planning
• Airway management, equipment size, and anesthetic safety sometimes depend on weight.
• Nutrition assessment
• When looking at growth in pediatrics, malnutrition, or unexplained weight changes that may point to another condition (e.g., thyroid disease, cancer).
• Pregnancy & pediatrics
• Weight tracking is important for fetal growth, infant development, and safe pregnancy management.
• Heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease
• Fluid retention can be tracked by monitoring daily weights.
• Significant unexplained change
• Rapid weight loss or gain can be a symptom worth investigating.

🚫 Times When Weight Is Not Clinically Relevant
• Broken bones, sprains, or acute injuries
• Ear infections, hearing loss, sore throats, or colds
• Skin rashes (unless specifically weight-related, like intertrigo)
• Mental health visits where weight isn’t part of the presenting problem
• Any visit where weight is not discussed, not assessed, and not related to the complaint

👉 Your weight should only be part of care when it’s medically necessary for safety/diagnosis, or when you want it included. Otherwise, it doesn’t belong.

Highlighting weight at every visit isn’t helpful.
It’s harmful.
It reduces people to a number, feeds stigma, and distracts from the real reason they came in.

We were raised to believe our bodies are résumés. That discipline shows in abs, that worth is a number on a scale, that potential is visible in size.

But the more you live by that belief, the more you miss the real path.
✨ You lose time.
✨ You lose presence.
✨ You lose connection.

Your appearance isn’t proof of your value. It’s not the map — it’s the distraction.

The truth? Worth was never visible in the first place. You don’t have to live to be looked at. You get to live to be alive.

🍽 Food choices are the surface.
But underneath are the threads:
• History → past diets, health conditions, trauma, and family patterns.
• Experiences → shame at the doctor’s office, celebrations tied to food, moments of restriction or binge.
• Lifestyle → work hours, family dynamics, budget, sleep, stress.
• Beliefs → “carbs are bad,” “I have no willpower,” “my worth is my weight.”

When someone says, “just tell me what to eat,” it ignores these layers. That’s why quick fixes never last.

Real nutrition care is about untangling the roots, not just trimming the leaves. It’s about seeing the whole human, not just the plate in front of them.

👉 That’s why MNT (medical nutrition therapy) is powerful. It’s not a list of foods. It’s a partnership to explore your history, your beliefs, and your life — and to translate that into nourishment that actually fits you.

Because food is simple.
But people are layered.
