Wait, if I obsess about something that won’t make it better?!? Sometimes if we think about something a lot, we can identify different problem solving strategies. Sometimes when you think about something a lot, you just feel all the negative feelings, without changing anything or making any progress. This most often happens before bed or in the middle of the night. Have you ever identified the perfect solution in the middle of the night? Probably not. Try this strategy of writing out the things that are worrying you before you go to sleep, and make sure to do it at least an hour before you go to bed! positivechangetherapyct.com

Happy Friday! It’s no surprise that people are talking A LOT about politics in therapy. It’s not rocket science, but my top tip is to pick 1-2 news sources you consider reputable and limit your consumption to an hour a day. Second tip: Spend some time talking in person about something other than the state of the world.
Have a good weekend!

My intervention of the week: “but what if you didn’t?”Often people are trying to figure out how to get everything done they want to get done and feeling overwhelmed and frustrated in the process. Sometimes we are just taking on too much. Sometimes we feel obligated to do things that aren’t truly necessary. Looking at your weekend plans and all the things you “HAVE to do”, ask yourself: what if I didn’t? What if I started out by prioritizing the things I want to do, or things that will refuel me, or spending time not doing anything?

I often discuss with people what it means to be “happy“, and how to know when you are ready to leave therapy. Part of being “happy“, content, satisfied, leading a meaningful life, is realizing that there will always be challenges. Happiness does not mean that everything is going well, but rather that you have resources and feel able to cope with whatever comes your way.

Often in therapy a client’s goal is to “get back to my old self”. We often don’t realize how much an event changes us and how we experience the world. Therapy can help you get back to feeling good, and feeling in better control of your mood, and can also help you change your expectations of what “good” looks like. Www.positivechangetherapyct.com

One of the most important things in therapy is recognizing progress. My role is often to point out to people that they have made more progress than they realize or remember, and to help set realistic goals for what small step to try next. What “tiny” step towards a goal do you want to take this week? www.positivechangetherapyct.com
