Listen… we need to talk about something that happens in spiritual communities that nobody wants to call out.Parasocial relationships.
And before anyone gets defensive, this isn’t an attack. It’s a reality check.
A parasocial relationship is when someone feels emotionally close to a person who doesn’t actually know them. The relationship is real to the follower, but it’s mostly happening in their own mind.
This happens a lot online with celebrities. But it happens way more in spiritual spaces because spirituality opens people up emotionally and psychologically.
I’ve had people straight up tell me that they feel we are connected because of the stuff I post…
I do understand because people start watching someone’s content every day.
Listening to their teachings.
Learning from them.
Feeling seen by them.
But here’s where things can go left.
Sometimes the admiration stops being about learning, and it turns into projection. That’s scary AF.
People start believing the teacher is speaking directly to them through posts.
Or that they share some kind of special spiritual bond with the teacher.
Or that the teacher is energetically communicating with them privately.
And at that point we’re not talking about spiritual connection anymore.
We’re talking about a psychological attachment that has left reality.
That’s where things can start looking like spiritual psychosis.
Not in a disrespectful way. But in the literal sense that someone’s perception of the relationship is no longer grounded in what’s actually happening.
But the truth is, learning from someone doesn’t mean you belong to them spiritually.
And it definitely doesn’t mean they belong to you.
Healthy spiritual learning looks different.
You listen.
You take what resonates.
You grow.
You develop your own discernment.
You don’t build your identity around another person’s platform.
Because the goal of spiritual work is not to create followers who orbit you forever.
The goal is to create people who can stand on their own spiritual authority.
