Clear communication is a critical part of our personal relationships with others, but hearing loss can sometimes put a wrench in exchanges, resulting in frustration, fatigue, and miscommunications for everyone involved. Whether your loved one is in the early days of adapting to new hearing aids or still thinking about getting their hearing tested, one of the best things you can do for them—and your relationship—is to support their hearing needs when you communicate with one another.

Here are 10 dos and don’ts for communicating with someone with hearing loss:
1) Do get their attention before you begin talking
2) Don’t speak to them from another room
3) Do speak clearly but conversationally
4) Don’t mumble
5) Do repeat things if asked and try to rephrase what you’ve said
6) Don’t yell
7) Do use facial expressions and gestures
8) Don’t cover your mouth or eat while speaking
9) Do be considerate during group conversations
10) Don’t forget to suggest a hearing evaluation (if appropriate)
