How the Immune System Affects Tattoo Removal Results

The immune system plays an important role not only in getting a tattoo but in laser tattoo removal as well.

The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs in the body that is tasked with preventing, detecting, fighting off, and removing foreign invaders, such as germs, viruses, infections, and bad bacteria. It also plays a role in helping the body heal when it is injured.

White blood cells, or leukocytes, do the heavy lifting work of attacking and removing the foreign invaders from the body. There’s a specific type of white blood cell that does this: the phagocyte.

Phagocytes work to destroy and remove the invaders by eating up things that don’t belong. For example, tattoo ink particles. The reason your tattoo is visible is because the ink particles are too large for phagocytes to remove.

So when tattoo ink is injected into your skin, the white blood cells will try to remove it, which is why it’s common for a new tattoo to be raised or become itchy from time to time. That’s the phagocytes at work, trying (and failing) to remove the tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal shatters the ink particles into smaller fragments that allows the phagocytes to do their job effectively. But a compromised immune system can negatively impact the laser tattoo removal results.

Thankfully, there are ways to give your immune system so you can successfully get your unwanted tattoo removed.
