Honored to be featured in Richmond Inno's article today about moving medicine forward through relentless innovation. The traditional doctor-patient visit is still very important, but it's only the beginning. You need to be able to insert yourself in the healthcare journey of patients to really be effective. “I think healthcare is still very much the Blockbuster model, where I’m the provider, you come to me, and that’s how it works,” said Dr. Shaival Kapadia. “But I think what you are seeing in healthcare is the Netflix model evolving.”

We as doctors have to stop acting like yellow cab drivers. And become more like Lyft drivers. Think about it, in a yellow cab experience, there’s a plastic barrier between the driver and the passenger, a TV screen and credit card swiper on the passenger side, and little interaction.

Contrast this to the Lyft experience where the passenger steps into a private car, exchanges names with the driver, and maybe even rides in the front seat. This feels like an experience, a journey.

Medicine has become the yellow cab experience — incessant demand, transactional, patriarchal. Read on for three ideas and patients stories to spark our journey toward connected cardiovascular care in a Lyft-like fashion.

Trust and empathy are a providers most powerful healing forces. I’ve had the pleasure of serving Mr. Robert, as an example, for over 20 years. He’s a 58-year-old truck mechanic, and like many of us, he has struggled with weight, hypertension, and diabetes. Unfortunately, his health concerns began to limit his ability to work. I had been following his case thru our EMR but had not seen him in a while so we scheduled a visit. I let him vent for the first fifteen minutes, he was clearly very frustrated with his condition and at the system. At the end I asked him how I could help him. He said, “Doc, you have already helped me. You have always been there for me. Doc, Just knowing that you care is enough.”

When you truly listen and create trust, you move beyond transactional relationships. A doctor-patient relationship is an experiential journey, often lifelong.

Patients often think of the stethoscope as the first tool in a provider’s toolkit. In reality, it’s listening without a stethoscope. Listing to what a patient has to say, whether it is for just two minutes or 10 minutes, is what creates connection. And connection creates healthier lives. Best of all, when we listen -- patients tell you the most amazing stories!

Today marks the start of a new journey! Beginning January 2021, I have the honor of partnering with patients on their cardiovascular journey toward optimal health at James River Cardiology. For years I’ve watched James River Cardiology grow and have greatly respected their commitment to serving Richmond and the Tri-Cities region, as well as many rural locations along the southern border of Virginia. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Mitesh Amin to develop innovative approaches to patient care in these areas and beyond. While the “heart” of my practice at James River Cardiology will be the care of patients with general cardiology needs, I will also have an opportunity to work together with the impressive team to enhance the patient experience and to extend care beyond the four walls of our clinic. I will be based primarily at the James River Cardiology office at the Ashlake Medical Center off Hull Street in Chesterfield but will also see patients at the Colonial Heights office. Thank you to all of my colleagues, partners, and patients over the years – you motivate and inspire me every day and I look forward to our continued collaboration as we work together to make medicine more personalized and participatory!
