Kelsey Sullins, SLP Hi! I am a pediatric speech-language pathologist providing therapy services at Your Village, STL.

Play isn’t just fun .. it’s the brain’s favorite way to learn. 🧠✨

As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I promise there’s a LOT more happening during play than meets the eye. When kids are building towers, pretending with toys, or giggling through a game, their brains are busy practicing:
• language• problem-solving• social skills• creativity

Play creates the perfect environment for learning because kids are motivated, engaged, and curious. That’s where the real magic happens.

So yes… that silly game, the pretend picnic, the “again! again!” moments? They’re all part of the work. 💬🧸

Consistency is key 🔑

In speech therapy, those little moments add up BIG time. Showing up regularly and practicing at home helps your child’s brain make stronger connections for language and speech sounds. Therapy isn’t just what happens in the clinic—it’s what happens during snack time, bath time, and play time too 💛 Small, consistent practice = big progress.

Play isn’t “just for fun” — it’s how children learn to communicate. 🧠✨

From my perspective as a pediatric speech pathologist, play is where language truly comes to life. When children are playing, they’re motivated, engaged, and emotionally connected — and that’s when learning sticks.

During play, kids practice:
• Taking turns
• Understanding and using new words
• Following directions
• Problem-solving
• Expressing wants, needs, and ideas

The best part? You don’t need flashcards or drills. Simple, everyday play builds strong communication skills when we follow your child’s lead, model language, and keep it fun.

So next time it feels like “just playing,” remember — you’re building the foundation for speech and language. 💬💛

This is why modeling matters.

AAC isn’t a last resort—it’s a language. And like any language, kids need to see it, hear it, and experience it every single day.

Parents, caregivers, teachers… your models make all the difference. 💛

Let’s give our AAC users the language input they deserve.

Speech therapy sessions give your child 30-60 minutes of practice each week, but that alone isn’t enough for skills to transfer to everyday life. The real growth happens in the small moments at home - during play, mealtime, bath time and car rides.

Consistent practice = consistent progress 💛

Do you ever find yourself questioning if a speech and language evaluation would be right for your child? While this isn’t a complete list, it’s a great starting point to determine if your child may benefit from a speech and language evaluation.

✨Every voice matters. Every single one. 💬
Whether it’s spoken, signed, AAC, or gestures — communication is connection. And every child deserves to be heard, understood, and celebrated for how they express themselves. ✨

✨Why You Should Ditch the “Say ___” Prompts✨

As tempting as it is to say “Say thank you!” or “Tell me what this is,” these types of prompts can actually create pressure and frustration for young children—especially those with language delays or speech sound disorders.

Instead of demanding language, try modeling it. 💬 For example, you can say:
👉 “Thank you!” with a smile
👉 “It’s a car!” while holding the toy
👉 “I want juice,” as you pour a drink

Children learn to communicate through connection—not correction. Let’s build confidence, not performance. 💛

👶💬 “Is that really a word?” Yes, it might be! When it comes to speech and language development, words come in all shapes and sounds — from signs and animal noises to approximations like “ba” for “bottle.”⁣

As pediatric speech therapists, we count:
✅ Consistent word approximations
✅ Gestures and signs
✅ Sound effects with meaning
✅ Words in any language

✨A word is ANY consistent form of communication your child uses intentionally to express a need, want, or idea. It’s not just about perfect pronunciation!⁣

📣 Curious if your child is on track with their speech development? Drop your questions in the comments or send me a DM — I love helping parents understand their little one’s language milestones!
