How can lifestyle habits buffer the mental health effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)?
At , Liana Abascal, PhD, MPH, DipACLM, shared data showing that sleep and satisfaction with social support significantly mediate the relationship between ACEs and depressive symptoms—while stress, nutrition, physical activity, and substance use had little effect.
💤 Sleep accounted for 45% of the variation in depressive symptoms.
🤝 Satisfaction with social support accounted for 15%.
“Sleep is the foundation of coping,” Abascal noted. “If you haven’t slept, it’s a lot harder to make positive decisions and engage in healthful behavior.” She also highlighted the need to assess and support social connections in clinical care.
