How can lifestyle habits buffer the mental health effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)?

At , Liana Abascal, PhD, MPH, DipACLM, shared data showing that sleep and satisfaction with social support significantly mediate the relationship between ACEs and depressive symptoms—while stress, nutrition, physical activity, and substance use had little effect.

💤 Sleep accounted for 45% of the variation in depressive symptoms.
🤝 Satisfaction with social support accounted for 15%.

“Sleep is the foundation of coping,” Abascal noted. “If you haven’t slept, it’s a lot harder to make positive decisions and engage in healthful behavior.” She also highlighted the need to assess and support social connections in clinical care.

How do clinicians sustain meaning and well-being while caring for increasingly complex patients?

A growing conversation in healthcare is shifting the focus from “pushing through” to understanding what shapes both patient behavior and clinician response. When clinicians are supported in developing insight, communication skills, and self-awareness, clinical encounters can feel less draining and more purposeful.

Lifestyle medicine offers a framework that supports whole-person care — for patients and clinicians alike — grounded in connection, reflection, and long-term sustainability in practice.

🩺 Caring for others starts with caring for the clinician.

From honoring readiness for change and building in choice, to staffing realities and the emotional dimensions of eating, this conversation offers practical insights for clinicians, health systems, and community partners working to design effective, equitable FIM programs.

🎥 Dr. Wetherill also expands on these lessons in an ACLM webinar recording, where she walks through the real-world implementation of Food Is Medicine programming in Oklahoma.

What role can lifestyle medicine play in treating major depressive disorder (MDD)?

A new expert consensus statement from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine brings clarity to a growing body of evidence: lifestyle interventions are a foundational component of high-quality care for adults with MDD.

Using a rigorous Delphi process, experts reached consensus across eight topic areas related to assessment, diagnosis, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, connectedness, substances, and adherence to treatment —highlighting the role of LM as primary, adjunctive, and preventive strategies alongside psychotherapy and pharmacologic care.

Notably, physical activity emerged as the lifestyle intervention with the strongest evidence for improving depressive symptoms, while plant-forward nutrition, restorative sleep, and social connection were also considered meaningful in supporting brain health and treatment outcomes. The panel also reached strong consensus on identifying social and psychological barriers—including trauma and social drivers of health—and tailoring interventions to individual readiness, access, and support systems.

🧠 Depression care is stronger when we address how people live—not just what they’re prescribed.

What happens when lifestyle medicine meets payment reform?

In a recent Healio report from , experts explored how new service codes and emerging CMS models are advancing whole-person care — highlighting why payment reform remains one of the biggest opportunities to encourage widespread adoption.

With strong evidence, growing patient demand, and clinician readiness, the message was clear: payment models must evolve to support prevention, outcomes, and long-term value.

Newly launched CMMI models, ACCESS and ELEVATE reflect that evolution and are the biggest opportunities to align payment policy for lifestyle medicine care delivery to date.

💬 “If whole-person care is our destination, payment is either the engine or the brake.” Let it be the engine.
