This time of year we do a lot of laser skin resurfacing. Laser treatments that target rejuvenation, collagen stimulation, and upregulation of specific growth factors can slow the aging process and reduce the risk of developing some types of skin cancers (in addition to making the skin look radiant and luminous).

Recently we’ve been impressed with the laser from because it delivers a thorough, customizable treatment with little discomfort and less recovery time than its predecessors. Every few years we see a big advance in laser technology- and this one is it!

That’s a wrap for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery annual meeting in Chicago this year. The ASDS is the premier organization for MDs that specialize in procedural dermatology. The meeting is a yearly highlight of the best in derm surgery, aesthetics, lasers, and “what’s next” in our field. I catch up with friends (who are world-renowned derms…the REAL influencers) and industry colleagues who are moving the specialty forward. And the best part is that all of it flows down to patient care, more advanced treatments, and better outcomes.

Heading out to the annual American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Annual Conference this week. Will be fun (but busy) with lectures, running educational sessions and as a new Board of Director member. It’s also great to catch up with friends and colleagues to discuss what’s new and hot in the field. There is always something new and exciting to bring back to our patients…

Recent FDA warnings on mislabeled, unapproved, and counterfeit botulinum toxin causing serious side effects are scary- but don’t freak out. It is easy to avoid problems related to these inferior (and/or dangerous) products…simply seek treatment by (or overseen) by a board certified dermatologist or cosmetic physician. If you have any hesitation at all, ask your physician. They can show you the exact product being used. Botulinum toxin is one of the safest cosmetic treatments we provide with very high patient satisfaction. Decades of use demonstrate its safety- but be sure you trust the person holding the syringe.

Exion Clear Radiofrequency microablation is a new technology we are pleased to bring to our patients. After completing two clinical studies with the device (and having treatments myself) we have been impressed with the subtle skin tightening and improvement in the quality of the skin around the eyes and on the neck. There is some recovery time (3-4 days for the eyes and 7-10 days for the neck), but patients like that the recovery is manageable (with makeup) and the treatment is quick. In the original studies- three consecutive treatments yield the best results. Exion Clear RF is not a laser so it allows us to easily treat around the eye to help stimulate collagen for lifting and improving texture. It’s going to be a very popular device in our rotation! Watch until the end for before + after photos.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss in small, round patches, most often affecting the scalp but sometimes other parts of the body as well. Alopecia areata occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles and may lead to varying degrees of hair loss. Thankfully this patient is doing well and regrowing hair after a series of steroid injections and the use of topical rogaine. So if your hairdresser notices some patchy round bald spots- don’t panic! Simply seek out a board certified dermatologist for treatment (which is the action to take for ANY hair loss issue). 😊

Wrapping up an amazing vacation with family in Switzerland. Hiking by day (to burn off all the Swiss chocolates) is not a bad way to make memories with the kids. It was awesome 👏 🥾 🏔️

ASLMS is a multidisciplinary meeting of internationally renowned laser and device experts. It’s where we get together to discuss new technology and techniques- a real “what’s next” in laser and device-based dermatology. I’m sure I’ll be bringing some of these new advances to our office soon!
