Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss in small, round patches, most often affecting the scalp but sometimes other parts of the body as well. Alopecia areata occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles and may lead to varying degrees of hair loss. Thankfully this patient is doing well and regrowing hair after a series of steroid injections and the use of topical rogaine. So if your hairdresser notices some patchy round bald spots- don’t panic! Simply seek out a board certified dermatologist for treatment (which is the action to take for ANY hair loss issue). 😊

ASLMS is a multidisciplinary meeting of internationally renowned laser and device experts. It’s where we get together to discuss new technology and techniques- a real “what’s next” in laser and device-based dermatology. I’m sure I’ll be bringing some of these new advances to our office soon!

Saw a patient today with Alopecia Areata. It’s an autoimmune disorder where the immune system gets confused and attacks the hair follicles leading to patchy, very sudden hair loss. Known triggers include a family predisposition, stress, hormonal or environmental factors, and it can be seen with other autoimmune conditions. For this 👆patient, we injected cortisone into the area a month ago and now she has some regrowth, but we needed to do another treatment today as the area is still actively shedding hair. If you (or your hair stylist), notices any circular areas of hair loss, get to a board certified derm right away for treatment.

Although cold sores can happen at any time of the year, we are seeing a wave of them right now. Cold sores or fever blisters are a result of the herpes simplex virus and are activated for a number of reasons- fever, heat, sun, stress, lack of sleep, and sometimes change of season. They are incredibly annoying because if you don’t address them right away, they can linger for weeks (and topical treatments on their own really do not work well). Here’s how I help my patients heal as fast as possible:

• take valacyclovir 2grams by mouth right away and then another 2 grams 8-12 hours later- you want 4 grams in the first 24 hours
• once you’ve taken valacyclovir then start topical cortisone ointment (the stronger the better) on the spot 3-4 times a day with a Q tip Keep the area moist with ointment to prevent the cracking and bleeding that happens as it heals
• wash your hands and don’t pick it to avoid spreading the virus

These steps will require prescriptions from your derm and work best when started *immediately* when a cold sores is first noted (usually feels a little itchy or a slight burn at the area before the bump forms). The sooner the medications start, the better it works so don’t be shy about talking to your derm!

Did you know we have great treatment combinations for photodamage on the arms and hands too? Lasers aren’t just for the face, neck, and chest. Treating the arms is best done in the winter because it takes a while to see the results and needs to be covered when healing. But the results are worth waiting for…
