Another amazing meeting in Nashville is in the books. Such a great mix of experts in derm, plastic surgery and oculoplastic surgery. Seeing friends, teaching, and discussing the next advances in our field is not a bad way to spend a weekend. These brilliant docs are a true inspiration. 😊

That’s a wrap on the 2006 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery meeting this past weekend in Savannah. It’s an advanced meeting where we share the new breakthroughs in skin laser and light-based treatments. I teach, and learn, and catch up with friends and colleagues. And the food in Savannah was really good too! 😊

Looking forward to presenting at the upcoming SCALE meeting in Nashville next month. A great meeting to learn from my esteemed colleagues and catch up with industry leaders to talk about what comes next in non-invasive aesthetic treatments.

Rosacea is a common skin condition with inflammation and a poor skin barrier at its core. We use prescription medications and proper daily skin care to help with breakouts and sensitivity, but the redness is best addressed with laser and light-based treatments. A series is usually recommended to reduce the redness and enlarged blood vessels, then maintenance treatments are done as needed to keep the skin looking good. There are several good devices to help- and most have minimal recovery time. These are best done by a laser expert to get the most out of each treatment, so skip the medspa and head to your dermatologist for the most effective treatment.

More and more information is coming out regarding serious safety violations in medspas around the country. The use of counterfeit or unapproved products, unsafe drug compounding, and lack of proper oversight are putting the public at risk (and the ā€œwarning lettersā€ don’t seem like much of a deterrent to me). Protect yourself by being a smart consumer and seek out those clinics that are well-supervised by a physician with expertise in aesthetics. It’s scary out there and unfortunately, there aren’t enough resources to police these bad medspas. Do your homework! 🧐

Chemo cream vs. skin resurfacing lasers to clear out the photo damage. There are pros and cons to both. However, I like the message here…protect your skin when you are younger to avoid a lot of this damage when you are older. The top three most important?

1. Wear a Hat
2. Broad spectrum SPF
3. Get a bigger hat šŸ˜‰

Don’t ignore any dark spot that’s changing on your face! Even if you are in your 30s- it could be melanoma. Alpine athletes have a higher risk do to exposure so if you have a skin lesion changing in size, shape or color, get to a board certified dermatologist right away to get it checked out. I’ll post this lovely patient’s surgery and laser scar revision in the future as she is still undergoing treatment.

Happy National Dermatologists Day to all my friends and colleagues. šŸŽ‰

Why 12? It’s the minimum number of years we went to school to become a Board Certified Dermatologist. That doesn’t even count the amount of research that many of us did. It’s an honor. It’s a privilege. And I can’t imagine doing anything else. 😊

Every year more and more scientific evidence is published about certain lasers imparting protection for squamous cell and basal cell skin cancers. In my experience the effect is cumulative, so if you already have issues with pre-cancers and non-melanoma skin cancer on your face, don’t wait. Ask your if laser skin resurfacing can help reduce your risk. Skin looks better AND becomes healthier with specific lasers too. 😊
