Fall is settling in across Wyoming, and with it comes natural opportunities for reflection and gratitude.

There's something about autumn that invites us to slow down and appreciate what we have. Maybe it's the changing leaves, the crisp air, or the way golden hour light hits the mountains differently.

You know how when you're genuinely grateful for something, it actually changes how you feel? Turns out there's real science behind that. Practicing gratitude can help you sleep better, feel more connected to people, bounce back from tough times more easily, and just generally feel less stressed.

But here's the thing - gratitude doesn't have to be forced or fake. Real gratitude notices both beauty and struggle, acknowledges hard days alongside good ones.

Sometimes it's as simple as noticing one thing that went well today. Or thanking someone who made a difference. Or just taking a moment to appreciate Wyoming's natural beauty during your drive home. Even acknowledging your own strength in getting through difficult times counts.

What's something you're genuinely grateful for as we head into fall?

Three weeks into the school year, and routines are starting to feel more natural. However, for some families, this is when the real challenges begin to emerge.

The excitement of new school supplies has worn off. The honeymoon period with teachers is over. Academic and social pressures are building.

If your child is struggling now, don't panic. This timing is actually very common.
Alyssa, who works with children ages 4+ through young adults, explains: "Mental health challenges take many different forms, and understanding that each person's experience is unique motivates me to keep learning new skills to connect with and support others."

Signs your child might benefit from additional support:
• Homework battles that feel impossible
• Changes in friendships or social anxiety
• Sleep disruptions or morning resistance
• Physical complaints without medical causes

Getting support early often prevents bigger challenges later.

What's one change you've noticed in your child since school started?

September is National Recovery Month - a time to recognize that recovery looks different for everyone and it's rarely a straight line.

Whether you're recovering from addiction, trauma, depression, anxiety, or life's other challenges, this month reminds us that healing happens in seasons.

Some days feel like spring - full of growth and possibility. Others feel like winter - requiring rest and patience. Both are part of the process.

Recovery isn't about perfection. It's about progress. It's about getting back up. It's about asking for help when you need it.

Stephanie founded Hope's Beacon after her own recovery journey from anxiety and depression. She understands that healing requires both personal strength and community support.

"Sometimes you have to 'make a way, find a way' with the resources you have," Stephanie learned during her banking career. "But you don't have to do it completely alone."

What's one thing that's supported you on your healing journey?

September is here, and with it comes one of Wyoming's most beautiful seasons - but also one that can trigger seasonal mood changes for many people.

As days get shorter and temperatures drop, some people notice shifts in energy, sleep patterns, or mood. It's a normal response to environmental changes.

Signs that seasonal changes might be affecting your mental health:
• Feeling more tired than usual
• Craving different foods or eating patterns
• Changes in sleep (too much or too little)
• Less motivation for activities you usually enjoy
• Feeling more emotional or irritable

The beautiful thing about Wyoming autumns is that we still have plenty of natural light and outdoor opportunities. Even 15 minutes outside on a cloudy day provides more light than indoor lighting.

You know your patterns better than anyone. Trust what you notice about yourself as seasons change.

What helps you feel your best during seasonal transitions?

Meet Alyssa McCann, MS, PPC - whose own childhood experiences with mental health challenges inspired her career helping others.

"I chose to become a counselor because of my own experiences growing up with mental health struggles and receiving counseling support throughout my life," Alyssa shares. "Having experienced firsthand how a positive therapeutic relationship can truly make a difference inspired me to pursue this career."
Alyssa specializes in depression, anxiety, ADHD, and behavioral issues, working with children ages 4+, teens, young adults, and families. She understands that counseling can feel intimidating, which is why she works hard to create safe, comforting environments.

"I know firsthand how intimidating counseling can feel, so I strive to make the first session as comfortable as possible by letting clients know we'll move at their pace," she explains.

When she's not in session, you'll find Alyssa reading, crocheting, putting together puzzles, or painting.

Our Cheyenne office is closed today in observance of Labor Day.

Today, we celebrate all the hard work that keeps Wyoming communities strong. Whether you're taking a well-deserved break or working through the holiday, remember that rest is part of productivity.

For many, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer - and that transition can bring up mixed feelings—excitement for fall routines, sadness about shorter days, or anxiety about upcoming changes.

All of these feelings are normal. Seasonal transitions affect everyone differently.
We'll resume regular hours tomorrow, September 2nd.

How are you honoring both your hard work and your need for rest today?

As August ends, let's acknowledge the growth that's happened - in our children, families, and ourselves.

Maybe it hasn't gone smoothly. Maybe there have been tears, arguments, and sleepless nights. That's not failure - that's real life with real people navigating real challenges.

Stephanie founded Hope's Beacon after her own journey with anxiety and depression. She understands that sometimes you have to "make a way, find a way" with the resources you have.

Growth is rarely linear. Struggles don't mean you're doing it wrong. Asking for help is wisdom, not weakness.

What's one thing you're proud of from this back-to-school season?

Happy National Dog Day!
Today, we're celebrating our four-legged therapists who provide unconditional love and mental health benefits.

Pets improve wellness in measurable ways:
🐾 Stress relief through oxytocin release
🐾 Routine and purpose through daily care
🐾 Social connection in our communities
🐾 Present moment awareness
🐾 Emotional comfort without judgment

In Wyoming's wide spaces, dogs become adventure companions and constant sources of joy. For children, especially, pets provide safe relationships to practice empathy and responsibility.

Ashley, who works with teens, young adults, couples, and families, understands how animals help create emotional bridges during healing journeys.

What's one way your pet has supported your mental health?

With experience at the Department of Family Services and her own healing journey, Ashley offers genuine, person-centered support for depression, anxiety, PTSD, domestic violence, and relationship challenges.

"It lets me help in ways that are more person-centered," shares Ashley. "At the end of the day, I get to help people build up to what they want to be and not on what everyone else wants them to be."

Ashley's approach creates a safe space where you can be vulnerable, gain empowerment, and feel truly seen without judgment.

Let's talk screen time and mental health during the school year.

Technology isn't the enemy, but our relationship with screens affects wellness, especially when kids are already managing school stress.

Signs that screen time might be impacting mental health:
• Irritability when devices are taken away
• Sleep difficulties
• Avoiding face-to-face activities
• Physical complaints

Kellie, our certified DBT therapist, helps families build practical coping skills around technology use. She works with teens, young adults, and older adults on building healthy daily life patterns.

The goal isn't perfection - it's balance that works for YOUR family.

What's one screen boundary that's helped your household?

National Relaxation Day reminder: Rest isn't lazy - it's essential for mental health.

For many in Wyoming communities, relaxation can feel foreign or guilt-inducing. We're raised with strong work ethics, but constant "go mode" keeps stress hormones elevated.

Simple relaxation that works in real life:
• Step outside for five deep breaths
• Watch Wyoming's big sky for 10 minutes
• Listen to peaceful music
• Do nothing for 15 minutes without guilt

Kellie, our DBT therapist, focuses on helping clients build practical coping skills for daily life - including the skill of intentional rest.

Your body works hard for you. Today, return the favor.

What's your favorite way to truly relax?
