"Unfortunately, the most common symptom of lung cancer is really no symptoms at all," says Dr. Cory Hogue, radiation oncologist at Franciscan Health Cancer Center Munster. But doctors have a powerful tool to catch lung cancer early - the lung CT scan. If you're between 50-80 with a history of smoking, talk to your doctor about annual screenings. Early detection can make all the difference.

She is called a rock star in her department because she does an exceptional job while also demonstrating the Franciscan Mission and Values daily at work.

Mary shows compassion and concern for our patients and families. If someone is having a problem or concern, she never judges, she listens and does anything she can to help. Mary always provides joyful service. She is happy to help with anything; whether it is getting supplies to keep the department running or addressing a complaint. Franciscan Health is offering Thanksgiving help for families facing food insecurity in central and northwest Indiana with four events in November. Times and locations are:

• Thursday, Nov. 6, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sierra Fresh Start Market Food Pantry, 1040 Sierra Drive in Greenwood.
• Monday, Nov. 17, 3 to 5 p.m., at 5454 Hohman Ave. in Hammond.
• Tuesday, Nov. 18, 3 to 5 p.m., at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. in Crown Point. Enter at Gate 2.
• Thursday, Nov. 20, 3 to 5 p.m., at 301 W. Homer St. in Michigan City.

Groceries will be distributed per family on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Attendees must present valid proof of Indiana residency. Volunteers will be on-site at each location to assist with lining up vehicles for the drive-through events. For safety purposes, attendees must be in vehicles and not on foot.

The Mobile Markets are made possible through a partnership with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and generous donations to the Franciscan Health Foundation’s Food Insecurity Fund. Donations may be made at https://www.franciscanhealthfoundation.org/ or by calling (219) 661-3401.

Congratulations to Emily Clarke, PCT, Franciscan Health Indianapolis Post-Surgical Department, on being our latest Lily Award winner. The Lily Award recognizes a non-RN coworker who goes above and beyond to make an impact by assisting a patient, family member or coworker.

Emily was nominated by a patient’s wife, who shared:
“My husband is recovering after a couple of major surgeries. Emily has been very helpful in taking care of all those extra little needs and wants. But the thing that makes her a rock star to me is the bed. My husband is a very tall man. She looked, waited and got a bigger bed with an extender on it. She brought it in all made up. This has made his comfort so much better. Also, less work for nurses not to have to pull him up in the bed all the time. Please know this extra effort that Emily put into the care of my husband is so appreciated.”

Thank you, Emily, for going the extra step and living our Franciscan mission and values!

November kicks off Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This month we are dedicated to raising awareness about lung cancer, its risks, and the importance of early detection and treatment.

Brian Dickover, MD will be answering your questions all month long.

Today we ask: "What would you tell a former smoker who is hesitant about getting screened?" 🗣️

“What I would say to someone who has hesitancy to get screened is that the risk that they subjected themselves to in smoking is actually greater than the risk of the scan, and that the cost of the ci******es when they were smoking is greater than any cost they may have to afford for the scan. Last, that it's better to treat someone early for lung cancer than wait and have treatment be more difficult and also risk complications or suffering.”

Breast cancer isn’t just a women’s concern—men can get it too. Early detection is key, so don't ignore unusual symptoms. Awareness saves lives. 💙
"It's rare," says Sheela Konda, MD, radiologist with Franciscan Health Cancer Center in Munster," but what's interesting is it tends to be larger and may even have spread to other places compared to the same type of tumor in a woman because men tend to ignore some of these symptoms because it's not very common."

💙 A big thank-you to Old National Bank for donating $15,000 to support Franciscan Health’s Food Insecurity Program!

This generous gift will fund food purchases for three months at our Fresh Start Market, helping feed local families facing food insecurity.

Since 2021, Old National Bank has contributed more than $40,000 to this cause and their team continues to volunteer at our Mobile Markets to support neighbors in need.

“We are deeply grateful for Old National Bank’s continued trust and partnership,” said Franciscan Health Foundation Director of Development MinDee Richard. “Together, we remain committed to improving the quality of life in our community by ensuring access to healthy, high-quality food for those who need it most.”
