Nitrous oxide is one of the comfort measures we have available here at the birth center, and as you can see in this image it is self administered. During a labor pattern there are rest periods (seen in this photo!) which leads to building intensity, a crest where the pain is most intense, and a steady decrease of intensity that ends in another period of rest. During the building intensity, you can bring the mask to your nose and mouth and take deep breaths through the peak until you feel comfortable.
While nitrous oxide can be a useful tool on it’s own, we find families find it more helpful when it is used with other comfort measures, like doula support, physical touch/massage, movement, and controlled breathing.
