We’re excited to announce that **Licensed Certified Professional Midwives (LCPMs)** are joining our care team!

An **LCPM** is a nationally credentialed and state-licensed midwife who specializes in out-of-hospital birth settings, like homes and freestanding birth centers. They are trained specifically in supporting low-risk pregnancies and providing evidence-based, relationship-centered care.

By bringing together **LCPMs and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs)**, we’re expanding access to collaborative, midwife-led care that centers families, supports natural birth options, and honors your unique birth story. It’s truly the best of both worlds.

We’re proud to continue safe, community-based birth care in Chicago.

Ariel and Juanita (Our new Director!) were able to attend this year’s Latch and Stroll event by and were encouraged to be surrounded by so many committed and empowered birth workers. Thank you to CSSBC’s team of volunteers and event organizers for continuing to inspire and lead in these spaces that connect community to goals and action.

Guardian: One who guards, protects, or preserves.

In the times during birth where you are doing the internal work to prepare and rest for what’s next, you may not need a loud champion. We know it can be just as important to guard the space between, so you aren’t disturbed or distracted from the important work you are ALREADY DOING.

Nitrous oxide is one of the comfort measures we have available here at the birth center, and as you can see in this image it is self administered. During a labor pattern there are rest periods (seen in this photo!) which leads to building intensity, a crest where the pain is most intense, and a steady decrease of intensity that ends in another period of rest. During the building intensity, you can bring the mask to your nose and mouth and take deep breaths through the peak until you feel comfortable.

While nitrous oxide can be a useful tool on it’s own, we find families find it more helpful when it is used with other comfort measures, like doula support, physical touch/massage, movement, and controlled breathing.

Helping hands 😍 in the last part of the 1st stage, as your womb is opening to the fullest it can, many feel incredibly vulnerable and untethered. We tell families this is the time to get closer, to shrink their world to just their breath and sensations. It’s intense. It’s emotional. It’s hard. Bring the people you can fall apart with, and also who you trust to keep you encouraged to keep going.

From the photographer // - A birth full of calm, strength, and love. This mama finds great comfort laboring in the tub, all THREE of her babies have been born into water. What an honor to be invited into these sacred spaces to capture these moments for families. I still cannot believe this is my job.

Also, there’s something special about the Birth Center of Chicago — their obvious commitment to the care of each family is why I love capturing these beautiful, empowering moments alongside them. That and snacking on their stash of string cheese when I inevitably forget to bring my own snacks. In the daytime we order Thai. lol.

Do you have a BCC babe or are planning to? I’d love to chat about birth photography can look like for your family.
