Who Was Alexander Fleming?

Early Life and Education -
Alexander Fleming was born on August 6, 1881, in Lochfield Farm, Scotland. He was the son of Hugh Fleming and Grace Stirling Morton.

He did his schooling in Scotland and later moved to London with his siblings and completed his further education at the Regent Street Polytechnic.

He did not enter medical school immediately, but later using the inheritance left by his uncle John, Fleming pursued medicine and graduated with distinction from St Mary’s Medical School at London University in 1906.

The Discovery of Penicillin -

The Contaminated Petri Dish
On the morning of Monday, September 3, 1928, Fleming returned to his laboratory at St. Mary’s Hospital after a family holiday. Before leaving, he had been conducting experiments with Staphylococcus aureus, a common and dangerous pathogen. Fleming had left several glass petri dishes on his lab bench with these bacteria growing on solid medium.

Known for his meticulous nature, Fleming always examined his experiments before discarding them, even those left for weeks. As he randomly pulled samples from a stack of plates, one dish caught his attention. Upon noticing it, he famously exclaimed, “That’s funny….”

In 1928, at St. Mary's Hospital, London, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.

Fleming's Critical Observation -

The plate had been inoculated with a dense bacterial culture but was also contaminated with a microscopic fungus that had formed a large colony on one side. What made this extraordinary was the clear zone surrounding the fungus, an area completely free of bacteria. Today we call this the “zone of inhibition.” It revealed that the fungus was producing something that killed Staphylococcus aureus.

Fleming identified the contaminant as a mold of the genus Penicillium, which was producing a substance that killed....

A woman from Noida, Sakshi Pahwa, recently shared a distressing video of her young son in hospital, claiming that persistent air pollution in the Delhi–NCR region caused serious health problems that ultimately required surgery.

What the Family Says -

Pahwa said her family relocated to Delhi-NCR two years ago. According to her, soon after the move the boy began suffering from chronic cold, frequent allergies, respiratory distress, and breathing difficulties. Despite several courses of treatment, including antibiotics, steroid sprays, and other remedies, his condition did not improve.

Eventually, doctors diagnosed him with severely inflamed adenoids and tonsils (“stage 4” by the family’s account), and recommended surgical removal, reportedly the only viable option.

In her social-media post, Pahwa wrote: “Delhi NCR pollution didn’t just affect the air we breathe… it pushed my little one into surgery.”

The video has since gone viral, drawing widespread sympathy and outrage, particularly from parents and residents of NCR who report similar health concerns in their children.

Pollution Levels in Delhi-NCR: A Brief Context -

Delhi and the surrounding NCR region have recently experienced severe ambient-air pollution. For example, in early November 2025, average Air Quality Index (AQI) values hovered around 348; on certain days the index spiked to 400+, well into the “very poor” or “hazardous” categories.

Experts attribute the pollution surge to a combination of factors: vehicular emissions, construction dust, regional crop-residue burning, industrial emissions, and adverse winter weather causing stagnation of air masses — all of which increase concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) and other pollutants.

What Medical Research Says: Pollution and Child Respiratory Health -

Children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution. Their lungs and.......

Jharkhand, one of India’s youngest states, continues to grapple with deep-rooted public health gaps even as new institutions try to transform its healthcare landscape.

While it could be seen as getting better in many areas, urgent improvement is necessary too. According to National Health Mission’s Health Dossier 2021, Jharkhand had been flagged for limited primary care, high anaemia rates, large tribal populations and rising burden on tertiary centres.

MedBound Times connected with Dr. Nitin M Gangane, who has recently been appointed as the Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Deoghar.

Why NEET-PG Toppers Are Choosing Medicine & Radiology Over Surgery? -

This year’s NEET-PG top rankers have made their preferences clear: roughly half are opting for medicine and radiology, while very few are choosing core surgical branches.

In Western countries, the highest-ranked candidates often gravitate toward surgery, drawn by the challenge, skill, and exposure in the operating theatre.

In India, however, a growing number of bright students are avoiding surgical fields—and this trend has serious implications for the nation’s healthcare system. The NEET PG results were out on August 19 and the counselling results for round 1 came out on Friday.

MedBound Times connected with Dr. Shikhar Dabbas (MBBS) and Dr. Muskan Bhalla (OBGYN, RML hospital) to get their views about the NEET PG departmental allotment trend in India.

NEET-PG Round 1 Results: Top Rankers Gravitate to Medicine & Radiology
According to the provisional Round-1 allotment for NEET PG 2025, out of the top 100 All-India ranking candidates:

46 opted for MD General Medicine.

40 opted for MD Radiology (Radio-Diagnosis).

Only 3 chose MS General Surgery — underscoring the retreat from core surgical fields.

These numbers confirm that medicine and radiology dominate the preferences of toppers.

A broader analysis of the first 1000 allotted candidates shows the same pattern. According to data shared on Reddit (r/indianmedschool), MD General Medicine was chosen by 400 candidates, making it the most popular specialty. MD Radio-Diagnosis followed with 289 takers, firmly securing its place as the second most preferred branch. Dermatology had 74 takers, while core surgical branches such as MS General Surgery (61) and MS Orthopaedics (15) saw significantly lower interest. The total number of candidates in the dataset was.......

A 38 year old woman doctor from Hyderabad died by su***de after her United States visa application was rejected, according to police officials investigating the case.

The doctor, identified as Dr Rohini, was found dead inside her flat at Padmarao Nagar, Hyderabad. Her family discovered the incident two days after the apartment door was forced open when she did not respond to repeated calls. Police said the initial investigation indicates that she experienced intense emotional distress following the visa denial, which had been central to her professional goals.

Visa Rejection Cited in Su***de Note
Police reported that a handwritten note was found at the scene in which Rohini mentioned the rejection of her US visa and referenced emotional difficulties related to both her career plans and a recently failed marriage proposal.

Officers stated that she was living alone at the time of the incident, and there were no signs of external involvement. They added that her family had been aware that she was anxious about the visa outcome.

Her Medical Journey-

According to her relatives, Rohini completed her MBBS degree in Kyrgyzstan before returning to India.

She had been living in Hyderabad for around eight years and was working toward securing opportunities abroad. She had been preparing for examinations and visa processes required for medical training and employment in the United States.

Family members said she hoped to relocate in the coming months in order to expand her career options and secure long term financial stability.

How the Incident Was Discovered
Officials explained that her domestic help and a few delivery agents visited her apartment on Friday morning but received no response. When she continued to remain unreachable the following day, the people around informed the building watchman who contacted the family.

After several attempts to reach her, the door was broken open and the doctor was found unresponsive on her cot. She was declared dead at the site and....

22/11/2025

These days, relationships feel more like shared responsibilities than shared lives. In the rush of everything, we’ve lost touch with intimacy, which is the quiet heartbeat that keeps a relationship alive.

True intimacy is more than having a close bond. It is about showing up for each other through thick and thin, sharing responsibilities, being emotionally connected, and holding on to the small moments that make your relationship feel like something only the two of you understand.

But in today’s fast-paced world, the question quietly rises. Are we truly in relationships, or have we become partners who simply share responsibilities, pressure, and daily exhaustion?

When the Spark Dims? -

Slowly, the light begins to fade. The spark that once made you laugh together starts weakening under the weight of everyday demands. This is where a term many couples secretly recognize begins to appear. It is called “roommate syndrome.”

Psychotherapist and couple therapist Suresh Lukose on MedBound Hub describes roommate syndrome as "the state in which couples share bills, chores, and responsibilities but feel emotionally and physically distant."

He notes that modern marriages face significantly higher pressures than traditional ones, including career development demands, technological distractions, parental stress, household responsibilities, and the constant struggle for daily survival. In such situations, couples often find themselves slipping into this syndrome when they approach therapists for help.

6 Warning Signs of Roommate Syndrome according to a psychotherapist -

According to the psychotherapist, several signs indicate that roommate syndrome may have taken hold:

1. Task-Based Communication - Conversations revolve entirely around bills, children, work, and groceries. Communication becomes a to-do list rather than a connection point. The silly talks and personal sharing disappear.
